Skinsuit question.

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Skinsuit question.

Can they be used for other things than TT? Like road riding? What are the pros and cons versus a regular road kit? Thanks.

Yes.
No pockets.
Even harder to look after... erm... waste disposal issues... than bibshorts.
You'd look a bit eccentric. But I've known people to ride them in road races.

They can be used for any kind of riding as long as you don't use the pockets. I used them for velodrome, time trial, and criterium races, but not for road races, hills climbs, or training rides.

Advantages: Skin tight so they don't flap around. More aero. Sometimes cheaper than a jersey and shorts combined.

Disadvantages: No pockets (usually). Annoying to go pee (but only as annoying as bibs). They rip into shreds if you crash.

I like mine, I use it for everything except for road races, but even then, I've been known to use it every once in a while. The only things I don't like about skinsuits are:
1.) The bottom "shorts" part is sewn up way too high so you look like a nancy-boy with your shorts pulled way up
2.) The fabric kind of pisses me off, I'm not sure why.

I use my short and long sleeve skinsuits in TTs, crits and RRs. They both have two rear pockets, both of which have pretty tight openings. They don't cause any turbulence unless you have something huge back there, like a can of Coke. A gel or two won't do anything.

And, like CrimsonKarter said, the only think I dislike about skinsuits is that the back portion always looks extended too far. But, the only people who will notice that are those behind me, and I highly doubt they'd care to comment.

Not entirely relevant, but I was much happier in the days when shorts were mandated to be black.

Some dude in our group show up wearing his red/white shorts, with the white portion in the back, and you can not only see his ass crack, but all the individual hairs. I was friggin' appalled, disgusted, unnerved and taken aback.

me: "Excuse me sir, do you realize that your shorts are quite see-through"

him: "no their not"

me: "Better get a second opinion on that..."

One other point, eluded to by CK21's number 2 point: the fabric is all lycra, like your shorts are. That means it doesn't wick and evaporate as well. The reason they can cost less than a jersey/shorts combo is because the high-end Dupont (or whoever) branded, patented knit isn't used in the upper portion. These high-end knits make a HUGE difference for wicking, and you'll notice that you sweat more in a skinsuit. This is another reason that they're better for short events.

Skinsuits are perfect for MTB racing, and especially Cross racing... I think they are at least as much at home in a cross race as they are in a TT. Not many of us are really fast enough to benefit from the aero aspects of a skinsuit.... but not having crap to snag on when you are getting on/off the bike and shouldering it are something everyone can benefit from. Also, I think they are great for crits as well.

I'd think that anyone wearing a skin tight, one-piece spandex garment gave up worrying about that a long time ago.

if you're not sure about it, try the Hammer one, it's the same thing with their logo and $20 less...

This is the one I have, and it's quite comfortable. I'm 6'4" at 178 lbs, wearing a size L, if that helps. I don't think I could wear a medium w/out tearing a seam (because of crotch-shoulder distance), but I do wish this one was a tiny bit tighter:
