Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's a beautiful day out....

....And I'm stuck at school desperately trying to finish homework for two of my classes. Sadly, I have a class at 5:20PM, I'm going to have to beeline out of school at 6:30 to try and get home before it's too dark, so I can get a short ride in. After the really cold last few days here on Long Island, today is a welcome change, but the gods would not have me riding.

What makes this really painful is that my new bike came in last night. I went to my LBS to pick it up this morning. I was there at 10AM sharp just as he opened. He spent an hour adjusting the fit with me on a trainer getting me used to it, replaced the stem with a shorter one, and got the positioning on the cleats right. Really great experience for my first road bike setup (upgraded from a hybrid.) Now it's just sitting in my apartment just begging to be ridden, with me 8 miles away in class wishing I could be there.

I got a chance to snap a pic as I was running out, had to use the flash in my dark apartment because I had no time to take it outside for a better picture.

Considering I've been dreaming about this bike the past week, and every friend of mine has heard me yak about it till their ears bled, it's driving me nuts.

Great looking bike and welcome. If your a day time rider you might want to remove the reflectors and snap a new photo before someone a round here takes a shot at you. If you ride at night leave them on and be safe.

Nice bike. Where'd you get it...Carl Hart? It's hard for us office dwellers to work up much empathy for anyone who starts a complaining thread with the phrase "I can't ride until I get out of class...."

Got it at Campus Bicycle on route 25A in Stony Brook. I just moved to the area so I took a recommendation from some club riders; I can highly recommend it, great purchasing experience.

I'd take my previous 8-4 job over my current semester's load.. getting home at a predictable time is much nicer than having classes that run til 6:40pm most days and then sometimes group meetings after that

+1

Except take them off regardless and get some proper blinkies if you're riding at night.

When I was in college, one of the teachers I have for several different classes made a point of stating on the first day of school that she completely understands the need for "mental health days", and encourages moderate use of them. Go figure, she used more than anybody else in class, but the point is, for your own mental health, it's imperative that you skip class today and go home early to ride. Doctor's orders. Sort of.

I haven't even had time to remove the "57cm" sticker or any of the other stickers, or peel the protective plastic from the Lemond logo, much less get rid of the reflectors. I'll update the pic eventually.

Well, I couldn't take it so I skipped my noon class, drove home and did a quick ride. It's going to take some getting used to the look pedals (I had SPD on my old bike) and several times I tried to brake while my hands were up on the bars only to realize I needed to be up on the hoods to brake. I managed not to fall, though I scraped up the pedals a good bit trying to clip in from intersections. The bike rides like a beaut though. I was riding at my normal 16mph cruising speed I had on the hybrid with zero effort, and on a straightaway I kicked it up to 23 before I got too scared to go any faster given my comfort level with the brakes. To quote a certain fast food establishment's ad campaign, I'm lovin' it.

Unfortunately I have a quiz at 3:50 and an assignment due at 5:20, so I've gotta run back. You're right, I'm feeling much better now though.
