I wonder if a vintage Shimano derailler would fetch such a price....

Hmm, and I threw one of those away a couple of years ago - it was 50 years old, too, but used.

I should buy a bunch of Tiagra components, and lock them away for 50 years. Much cheaper then 401k's

Makes you wonder what it would be worth one day if you just bought a brand new Record group and stashed it in your garage for 50 years...
But wasn't that one of the very first paralellogram-linkage rear derailleurs? IIRC Shimano was still waiting for someone else to design it before they could mass-produce it and undercut the competition.

with the exception of the toothless jockey wheels, it looks a lot like the RD's that are on modern day Walmart bikes.

The bid's currently up to $6,100 USD, but with the falling dollar, that's equivalent to $18.99 Euro.

Good One
Yeah, the dollar sucks. If you look at the bids, you'll notice that they're all from the same two people, so there are either two people who really want that thing, or it's a scam, and they're trying to get a legitimate bidder to bid at the last minute. Assuming the bids are real, holy crap.

IT'S DEFINITELY A SCAM. how i know? I've seen the front derailleur goes for 12 dollars...and there was only 1 bidder who eventually won the item.
