Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is a tad bit fishy, like others have said. I honestly don't think your intentions were bad, but that you might have not thought it all through.

Why not post a few flyers up, saying you found a road bike and if someone can describe it you would gladly return it? I think you need to make some sort of an effort to get it back to the possible owner. If after a week or two nobody has claimed it, then I would go ahead and call it yours. Good luck.

I bought a used wally world mongoose bike for $1 in a yard sale. All components were rusted, looks like it was left outside. I took it out for a ride and one of the RD pulleys seized. I left it out by a lightpost. It was gone within an hour. lol
