Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First road bike, got it for free, some questions. with photos

I don't know much about it, other than it was green, but someone sprayed it black [I would have liked the green more] and It has Shimano Dura-ace brakes. Are those good brakes? I just lubed it, and filled the tires, and It went WAY faster than my MTB ever did! Also, whats better, cork or gel bar tape? Its got some black gauze like tape on now.

This is my first road bike!

Post pics. Who'd you buy it from, and for how much? It was spray painted black? Hopefully wasn't stolen.. anyway, Dura-Ace is definitely good stuff. Shimano's top-of-the-line component group.

Cork vs gel is a matter of preference. My favorite brand of tape is Fizik Microtex.

My LBS stocks Bontrager. I got it for free, it was just left leaning on a lightpost.

Read the thread title... the bike was free... and most road bikes do go faster than mountain bikes. Pictures would be helpful.

Actually, no. I was on my bike, so I called my parents to pick it up and drive it to the house.

Talk about old school! I wonder how much those brakes are worth.

And yes, the circumstances through which you acquired the bike are sketchy to say the very least. But I'll reserve judgment.

How much do you think they are worth? I'm not selling it, obviously, Its my first road bike, but I'm just wondering. Also, is it easy to wrap bar tape?

Unless, it was parked by a dumpster ... ya, I'd go with stealing. For you to "find the bike" means someone must have lost it. Not likely.

It was parked on a lightpost, so when the garbage truck comes it will take it.

Maybe there'll be another post here saying:

"I left my bike against a lightpost, and when I came back, some a**hole had stolen it. If anyone sees a black spraypainted bike, call the police."

Hopefully I didn't steal it. Also badly spraypainted. They didnt even do the bottom, and painted where the brake contacts the rim.

Sounds like someone else stole it, painted it and eventually ditched it for the OP to "find".

That must be 70's dura-ace. I think the dura-ace stuff on my 84 ciocc is different.
