Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

time to see a Dr?

I noticed some post-ride behind the knee pain a few months back. I dropped my saddle slightly & the pain dropped. Both in intensity & in location. It's now a dull pain at the top of my (right only) calf.

The pain doesn't ever really go away. I notice it when walking & more so when going up stairs. I'd pretty much settled into a comfortable routine of ignoring it over the last couple of months.

However, last night I was noticing that I can't really "flex" my right calf. I can flex a nice "knot" of muscle in my left calf. But trying to do the same thing with my right... it stays relatively smooth & does not get as hard (no definition). It also seems to be about 1/2" smaller in circumference.

Has anyone experienced anything similar & what did the Drs say?

thx

May be nothing, may be something, and without examining it or getting a more detailed history there's no way to tell.

(to follow will be the obligatory "I had pain behind my calf and it was nothing so you shouldn't worry" posts).

See a doctor. Internet medicine is teh sux.

I had same pain in same place on same leg last June. Three things I changed.
Raised seat
Aligned cleats
Stretched for 5 min before every ride - EVERY ride.

Problem solved

Sounds like the iliotibial band.

See a doc, but not all GPs are experienced at this.

The best resource for cycling medicine I've seen is Andy Pruitt's guide. It includes a lot of fit issues and knee/foot problems, with a lot of good preventative advice. Everyone should get this for Xmas.
