Assos Bib Sizing Recommendation
Yes, there are lots of past threads on this, but since I got some conflicting advice, I thought I'd ask opinions.
I want to get the F1 Mille bibs for my husband for his birthday. He's never worn bibs before but has been having a lot of problems with being comfortable in various pairs of new shorts this year. The mostly rave reviews on the Assos were encouraging that he could once again be comfortable riding.
He wears PI shorts - XL. He's 5'10", about 210 lbs, 36" waist, long torso and short legs with big, muscular thighs. He DOES NOT like tight fit in any clothing.
Indie Bike recommended the TIR (XLG but wider) and Randall Scott recommended a Large. Kind of a big gap between the recommendations.
Any help would be appreciated.

fwiw - a PI XL is really an XXL (considering his height, sounds like his PIs are too big).

FWIW, I'm 6'1"/190/34 waist, average torso, wear XL in the F1:13, and wouldn't want them any tighter below the waist or shorter in the straps.

Randall Scott is wrong. No way he fits into a Large.

Looks like he'll be on the tight side of the XL size and the bibs will probably be very long (and maybe baggy) on him.

I'm 6'3", 205 pounds, I wear a large Pearl Izumi and just about everything else in bike clothes, BUT, my Assos bibs are XL and I just squeeze into them. They specifically state that they cater to athletically trim people and in the biking world that means pro weight, which is substantially lighter than the general fairly fit individual. So, be warned, and be prepared to send it back if it does not fit.
Having said that, and believing they are grossly overpriced, I really do like the way they feel.

I went from PI large to large in Assos. The Assos are a bit tighter than the PI, but the fit is much better. The tightness felt by the shorts disappears quickly as the fabric sort of blends with your skin. It is very difficult for me to express how the feel of these short actually "feel", but I can tell you they are well worth the money if you can afford them.

He will be fine in XLs or XXLs,,,they will not be baggy on him and they will not be too long.

They used to run in normal sizes, but sometime between 1994 and 2003 they switched their sizing to cater to the fatties.

REALLY?? Huh. I had NO idea. I just bought them to wear to work on my car in. I guess that's why they're more comfortable when I'm hunched over working on the brakes than when I'm standing up washing the roof.

I'm 5'11", 163 lbs., 35" waist. I just tried on some different bibs at my LBS. I ended up with Louis Garneau Alveo in L, but when trying the Assos needed to go XL. The Assos were just too OCP for my modest riding level, but the LGs were just right for me.

5'9" 150 lbs;
Only wear Assos bibs and need a large. They are very comfortable, something reinforced during the transition to Castelli tights for the winter (ouch).
My one objection is that they seem to be cut shorter in the leg and I prefer a slightly longer cut.
