Local distance vs. Travel distance

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Local distance vs. Travel distance

Another post got me thinking about this ...

1. How many kilometers/miles have you logged "locally" ... and by "locally" I mean within your province or state, or within say ... about 300 kms of where you live or have lived in the past?

2. How many kilometers/miles have you logged in your country (obviously some of your local kms/miles will be included in this number)?

3. How many kilometers/miles have you logged in other countries (a few of these might be "local" too if you live near a border)?

-----

For me, since I started riding "seriously/regularly" 17.5 years ago ...

1. About 100,000 kilometers have been "local" ... I've lived in 3 cities in those 17.5 years so my "local" kilometers have been in three different areas of Canada.

2. About 102,500 kilometers have been in Canada (therefore about 2,500 kms have not been what I'd consider "local").

3. About 12,500 kilometers in other countries.

No wonder I'm bored with the local roads!!!

Well I guess I better get out on my bike some more to compete with the vets.

I have around 1800 miles total in me, all but about 155 are local. Southern minnesota rider, paved country rodes and trails. The occasional miles through towns just for fun.

How's Canada for riding conditions for the most part?

For the most part ... GREAT!!

Here's a set of photos of one of my current relatively "local" riding areas ... these were taken at the beginning of October (let me know if you can't open them):

That's one area I'm not bored with.

I've also got quite a few other photos, in other sets on Flickr, of my travels and rides around western Canada ... and other parts of the world.

100% of my 8-10k mi/yr are from the side garage door of my house.

(Well actually thinking a bit more recently I've done ~50mi in Polynesia and ~20mi in Argentina, but all on borrowed bikes from the door of the place I was staying and going further back another 30mi in Germany from relatives homes.)

Borrowed bicycles count!

Argentina? I've got South America fairly high on my list of places to cycle sometime soonish.

Wow, I wish I could ride where you are Machka. It looks like a fantastic place. If nothing else the roads are much better than around me.
