Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Shimano wheels - Really only 10 sp. compatible?

So I am looking at a new wheelset. The Ultegras that are on sale at Performance now. The WH-6600.

The Specs say compatible with 10sp only. I am running 9 speed.

I haven't seen the particular freehub that is on this wheelset, but I all the freehubs I have come across can run 8-9-10 no problem.

Is Shimano doing someting goofy here to prevent backwards compatibility?

Thanks,

-Z

In order to use 10 speed cassettes on 9 speed cassette bodies, you need a little shim on the back to take up some space. 10 speed only bodies don't have this space so the shim is not needed. Unfortunately, a 9 speed cassette would be too wide to fit. I also think the splines are taller but I'm not sure.

I dont believe the Ultegra hubs are 10 speed only. The DA hubs are.. Ive never seen an Ultegra 10 speed only hub but that may have changed.

In the interest of reducing weight, Shimano went with an aluminum freehub body, but as Al is weaker than steel, the splines had to be made taller. Only the 10-speed cassettes will fit in, the older cassettes like 8sp and 9sp won't fit in due to the taller splines. The Ultegra wheelset also uses an Al freehub body-->note this is for Shimano's wheels, not if you buy just the Shimano hubs.

This is a known typo on Performance's site. Ultegra - 6600 are 9/10 compliant.

https://techdocs.shimano.com/media/te...9830607316.pdf

As mentioned before a 10spd only freehub actually has taller (deeper) splines. This allows Shimano to use an aluminum freehub body without it being decimated like what usually happened with the old short spline 9spd configuration. Currently only the 7800 (DA) groupset hubs are using the lighter Aluminum frehub body - requiring that they be 10spd only.

The Ultegra freehub bodies are still steel - allowing them to be the shorter (8/9) spline which can be adapted to be used with a 10 spd cassette with the use of a shim (supplied with Shimano 10spd cassettes).

from interbike:

All Dura-Ace revert back to a titanium freehub body which is now backwards-compatible with most older Shimano cassettes.

Dino-

I have a 9-speed sram cassette on that same WH-6600 hub. It's only Dura Ace that had/has the '10-speed only' issue.

The Al freehub body is one of those Shimano "mistakes" and I read somewhere (forgot where) that they're moving away from the Al freehub body (back to steel or some other material).

True but if you look at the 9 speed hubs that have had a 10 speed cassette they are all torn up. I am a 9 speed guy and this has bothered me but unless Shimano brings back 9 speed production at the top end, you are stuck.
