Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chicago Weekend & Saw Some Cool Bikes

Just got back from a party weekend in downtown Chicago. After reading the BF since August, it was cool to see so many different street bikes. A new appreciation for single speed 'beaters' and show bikes alike. Must be crazy being a Courier there. How do single speeds brake? Also, I saw several dude's waiting at stop lights simply balancing their bikes w/o putting a foot down. I know there's a term for that, anyone???

Track standing for balancing - it is something you just learn on track. NOt hard to learn (some just can't get it though) - your sloped driveway is a good place to learn.

Technically you can have a single speed freewheel with conventional brakes. However when 'fixed' wheel, you can either apply back pressure on the rising pedal(which you typically do on track) or on street many will install and use a front brake. WHile on track there is a need to slow down and not brake suddenly, on the street the reverse is true.

Those dudes at the stop lights were trackstanding, something you can do on your freewheel road bike if you're really slick.

Too bad about this part, though. With a couple exceptions, the loop is not where the party's at. It's a city of neighborhoods. Next time you come here you should explore the rest of the city.

There was an Alleycat (messenger race) the weekend before last in Chicago actually. The Sadie Hawkin's Race - two-person teams with a girl required. I wasn't there but a contingent from DC went to it. Heard it was fun.
