Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

+1 Absolute gem.

Edot: Actually IMO this scene is Australian cinematic royalty. Probably the best ever.

Hey Jono,

did you race last night? Was the pace noticeably higher with Vogels et. al. there?

gloating thread,

well it's 4.30pm on thursday afternoon. Seeing it gets dark just after 8pm at the moment.

I can't decide if I should go and train in the park for a few laps or go and race at an outdoor track. Hmm, what to do?

I think so too. It rained a tiny bit today so the air should be nice and still.

Another reason to live in Melbania: longer days and later sunsets ....

Sunset 8:43 tonight:

Sydney sunset: 8:09

Ok, that's mainly coz you're further east, but we still get about 5 mins more daylight

not to mention the better coffee overall.

it's actually been overcast all day here, so it probably be dark earlier than that.

Good thing as the Mrs can ship the kids to bed early and I will have no guilt staying at the track late.

I can tell you. Windy. And in winter, wet and cold as well.

It was kinda hard, but not too bad. If anyone thinks A-grade vets is gunna be cruisey for them when they turn 35, think again

Losing 4 or 5kg makes a MASSIVE difference!! Much easier. So much so, that I reckon there's no point even racing if you're more than 5kg over weight, unless you're pepared to get dropped, and/or are just using it for the training.

As usual, I shot my load in the first 40 mins, chasing down breaks and being a stupid hero, so when I was farked I just sat in the pack for the rest of the race with my sore back.

A few of the usual strong basstids were there: Rob Crowe, O'Callaghan, Guy Green, etc, etc, Jeezuz!!

You need to do some cornering practice, seriously!! You should be able to ride through that chicane no handed and pedalling!! And I'm a pretty crap cornerer compared with some of the real crit monkeys

Yeah, I will. I think I had too much pressure in my front Pro Race -- about 115 -- so it felt a bit hard when I was leaning over. I went up onto those corner things a few times

Phillip Island, Calder, Sandown...why is it they build race car tracks at the windiest places known to man?

I also have a theory about netball courts (I occasionally used to hang around them for a purve as a teenager with me mates), that the build them in the coldest, dankest, wettest place in town, normally in a drained swamp or something.

Confession: Played mixed netball at school and made it all the way to the state final (we thgouth we was top sh^t). Out walked 4 guys over 6'5'' and some insanely nibble hot chicks. Inbetween drooling over the chicks and crappen me dacks over the monstor dudes its fair to say I was gorn.

Needless to say we barely touched the ball. Although I gave this one chick the best farken hip and shoulder of all time. To this day I bet she hasnt forgiven me!

That is fine if you want to ride late in the arvo & not get out of bed before 10am In winter you get less daylight hours

Yeah but you still have better coffee.

Absolutely bucketting down with rain here ATM, great if you're a duck, not so good for riding unfortunately.
