Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tacx Satori, Quiet Trainers

Anyone have this trainer? I live in an apartment and also don't want to wake my wife in the mornings. I'm looking for the quietest trainer out there. Elite also has a "quiet" trainer. The only drawback I see to the Tacx is that it is a mag trainer, and people seem to recommend the fluid like the KK and the Cycleops 2. How quiet are the "quiet" trainers and how do they compare with the KK and Cycleops?

Kurt Kinetic and 1Up have multiple posts on how quiet they are compared to magnetic (as I can vouch for). Still somewhat quieter is then use a dedicated trainer tire, Continental Ultrasport Hometrainer.

Search these forums on Kurt Kinetic, 1Up, and Hometrainer for more.

I have a Cyclops fluid. I would not say it even approaches quiet. I guess this is relative, but I would not say you could ride it and have someone in the next room over sleep well.

I recently got a Tacx Satori. Prior to this (2-yrs ago), I had the KK Road. While I can't compare the two back-to-back, I'd say the KK is quieter, but not by much. Noise isn't an issue for me since I crank the MP3s and a fan anyway. So far, I'm very impressed with the Tacx. Before I got my KK Road, I had a Tacx Cycleforce Swing, which I quickly returned...I didn't like the flexiness of the stand. The new Satori stand is much, much more solid.

Would blade spokes be significantly quieter?

I wonder how much noise is due to the spokes? Might blade spokes be significantly quieter with the quieter trainers?
