Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Itching "GUADS" Any ideas?

I started out on a 46 mile training ride this morning dressed in my usual early winter attire. I had a set of PI Arm and Leg Warmers on, mi PI Micro-sensor sharts, a wool upper base layer, a summer type cycling jersey and a wind shirt. The temperature was a balmy 34 degrees and the winds were out of the north at 15 - 20 MPH. The temperature only rose to 40 degrees by the end of the ride.

We started out primarily travelleing due north and directly into the wind for the first hour and a half and had climbed a total elevation gain of 2100 feet in the first 25 miles so it was a pretty hilly ride. We took our first break at the northern most spot and had travelled 25 miles of pure hell at that time. When we stopped at the store I noticed my quads were beginning to itch. It only got worse as we lingered there. I went into the woods and dropped my shorts to find my quads were red all over. As soon as we left the problem stopped. I travelled the remaining 21 miles and had zero issues at the end other than going into "GUADIAC ARREST" with cramps as I stood to climb a 14% hill at about mile 41.

We used the same detergent and all my cycling gear was washed together after my last ride. I had no issues anywhere else other than my GUADS. Has anybody ever had this happen or do you have an idea of why and what happened?

Ah dude!!! I'd like to know the answer to this as well. Last weeks 50 miler in mid 40 degree temps and sideways rain produced the same itchyness during the afterride shower. What gives? Oh, and it's mid November so the leg hair stays on for warmth.

I believe it's a bit of a histamine reaction to the cold. I used to get that running track in the winter all the time.

You may be right. It was primarily in the area that had only one layer as my leg warmers had slid down 4" - 6". I also have not done a ride of that length in those conditions. I've started in the 30s but it has normally warmed into the mid to upper 40s by rides end. BTW, I don't shave the legs.
