Do I only change my wheels as a pair?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do I only change my wheels as a pair?

I currently ride Askium's. If trading up wheels/rims, is this only done in pairs? Or can only the front or rear rim be traded?

Change either one as suits you.

Though wheels are generally cheaper as a pair (compared to buying two separately). But sometimes really good deals can be had on individual wheels on clearance.

I do it both ways, my race wheels are generally done in pairs. My training wheels are just whatever I have laying around. I generally use my powertap rear wheel though, and whatever front wheel I find cheap. I'm currently running a campy chorus front hub but I'm not really sure what rim I am using with it.

And what might happen if you don't change them as pairs ? Will one of the wheels be upset ?

You raise a good point. Considering they've been traveling together for awhile now, there could be some attachment issues.
