Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ofmega Question

I normally wouldn't bother everyone with this, but the search function on this forum doesn't appear to be working properly, so I can't do any research. I see a bike on eBay that has Ofmega compnents, and I don't know anything about Ofmega. Can someone briedly tell me about the company, its history, and whether they are respected component makers. On this bike, the crank, both derailleurs, and hubs are Ofmega. The brakes are Universal. Thanks for any input!

My impression was that Ofmega made decent, solid stuff. Nothing to get excited about for me, but not bad.

Check with the Classic and Vintage folks. I think Ofmega made decent Campy knock-offs, but I'm not sure.

I've got Ofmega cranks on one of my bikes, nice classic look. Nice quality stuff. I believe it's Italian, but I may be wrong.

Ofmega is pretty old stuff. Early 1980s. Some of it was marketed under the Avocet brand. According to Sheldon Brown, the Ofmega uses a weird square taper that doesn't match anything else.

I think they had some nice Miami Vice pastel colored derailleurs. Serious. They were the craze for, oh, a season.

I can't wait to move into a house. Having all my old Winnings in storage is starting to irk me.

Ofmega made good quality Campy copies.
The hubs used unground cups and didn't run as smooth as Record but
they were stout and looked good.
The cranksets were a Campy copy, 144mm bolt circle though not finished as nicely as Record and SR.

Decent stuff and you won't see a lot of it around.

I had some Ofmega components in the early 1980's. As far a being Campy copy I'll just say that they matched up dimension-wise, but were nowhere near the quality of Record level components of that era. For example, I had some wheels with Ofmega hubs and the cones were shot within 5K miles. I have a pair of wheels with low flange Record hubs from that era that are still perfect with over 50K miles on them.

On the other hand I replaced the cones on those wheels with Ofmega hubs with Campy cones and they were great until my wife's bike was totaled in an "accident" with a car.

Some of the later stuff had an 'aero' design crankset and Modolo brakes IIRC. Some of the Italian pro teams used Ofmega in the mid 80's, Atala being one of them.

As someone stated, there will be someone in Classic and Vintage who will know everything there is to know about these components.

I have a 1987ish Trek 660 with Ofmega components and modolo speedy brakes. I still have a ofmega premier rear and front deraillure with bullseye red pulleys.

They made very good quality components and were made in italy. Not record territory but sachs huret quality.

A friend of mine had an Ofmega Mistral crank on his bicycle that looked pretty cool back in the day.

Blasphemy!!!

Luckily, square tapers are somewhat forgiving. Doesn't mean you combo is proper though.

I can't answer the question but interested in the answers as my first road bike (steel Europa) I bought in 1985 had Ofmega gears and cranks... Hmmm downtube shifters, 6 speed cluster... memories
