Garmin Forerunner 305 - Useful Pointers and Questions
I recently purchased the Garmin Forerunner 305 after seeing some very postive comments on this forum and good rebate from Powerbar.
To help me and other users to make sure we get the most out of it I thought it would be good to have a thread ( one place) where users could post questions and also useful pointers on using it.
Examples:
Best SW to use -some mentioned better ones than the one it
Mapping fucntions - using google maps
Settting up workouts
Any cool functions or shortcuts to import and export etc you discovered
Some of my questions are:
1) Does anyone know an easy way to set up ( import) workouts into the SW program - example workouts from Friel's Cycling bible
2) How to use import a map or route -cue sheet you create in another program
3) Setting up a custom workout you read about -example ones Carmichael has in cycling magazine. I guess you enter it on the SW then import. I need to fiddle with setting up this up with time / HR / Cadence Intervals etc.

Congrats on the new purchase. I use the FR305 on my bike as well. Your best resource for help is the MotionBased forum. Lots of tips for the questions you have listed:

Don't run red lights, wear a helmet, use hand signals, get some cycle lights(front and rear) and, FFS, don't run red lights!

Thanks - I am real happy with it and used it for a run and spin class allready.
Just noticed a flyer in the box that had the motionbased link. The google map was cool and detailed.
Do you guys use the free version or the paid upgrade?
Also, do you use this instead of the Garmin Training center or combined?
How would you compare Motionbased to Sport tracks or ascent that others mentioned?
I am trying to see which is the most comprehensive and easiest to use /set up.
One other question - do you use the regular bike mount or quick release as I need to purchase one of these and the cadence sensor.

I use the Garmin Training Center to store all my rides. MotionBased is great for viewing maps of your ride - the free version only let's you view your last 10 posts. I use it occasionally when I want to share a route or ride with other people.
I have occasionally used this cool site to plan a route:
https://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/
This is a free Googlemaps app that lets you draw a route and then save it as a Garmin Course. You then can import this into the Training Center and output it to your FR. Lot;’s of info on how to do this on the MB forum.
I just use the Polar bike mount for the FR - works great. I picked mine up at REI:
