Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

fanny packs alternatives for road cycling

I have no long sleeve jerseys with back pockets and I don't plan on buying any, but I have plenty thermal polyester mid layers that have a small pack just big enough for keys and a cellphone that is a good substitute.

My upper body cycling wardrobe consists of:

6 Short Sleeves Jerseys
1 No Sleeve Jerseys
3 pairs of arm warmers (2 pairs winter weight, 1 pair summer)
1 waterproof jacket with no pockets in the back
1 windstopper jacket with no pockets in the back

Here's what I have that can substitute easily for cycling except they don't have back pockets.
10+ Polyester layers, long sleeve, short sleeve, and no sleeve.
8 Thermal Polyester mid layers (these have a small back pockets only big enough for the following: keys, and a cellphone.)

I need pockets while riding in winter, so I am considering using a fanny pack like this to stash my stuff.

Any alternatives besides a fanny pack so I'm not labeled a fred? I'm not buying any more damn cycling clothings when an alternative can be found.

How about just wearing one of your short sleeve jerseys over your base layers?

If the weather gets warm enough where the layering is too much, I go with jersey and arm warmers.

If the temperature is going to stay below the level where all I need is a short-sleeve jersey, I layer a jersey over a long sleeve base layer. The double layer on the chest is extra warm.

either way you have your pockets.

The local temperature ranges from 32F to 42F. When it hits 35F, I'm not going to bother with short sleeves.

I rode to work this morning with a temperature of 33 degrees wearing the following layers:
  • Bibs + tights
  • Sleeveless base layer
  • Long-sleeved thermal zip-neck running shirt
  • Short-sleeved jersey (there's your pockets)
  • Fleece vest
  • Sugoi cycling jacket (nylon - mostly a windbreaker, with little insulation, but it also has a single zippered pocket in back).

If you get the right mix of layers, it's pretty easy to have pockets available in the winter, even without owning any long-sleeved jerseys.

Just think of your short-sleeved jersey as one more layer (typically, it will be the next to last layer before your outer jacket). The pockets won't be as accessible as riding in the summer, but there's not much can be done about that...at colder temps, you don't wear a long sleeved jersey as the top layer anyway.

Also - in the winter, if the temperature warms up quite a bit during a ride, it's not always possible to stash all your crap. Either plan better (and be a little cold early), or man up and prepare to get a bit overheated on the way back (I prefer going out a little cold if I know it's going to warm up later).

Or, wear a big fugly fanny pack...and be prepared for derision.

It can be near zero and I generally still wear a short sleeve jersey. I wear it over two or three base layers and under a jacket.

I do this too. I have a short sleeve or sleeveless base layer, then a long sleeve polypro long underwear top (if it's cold enough, or I am riding slow, like with my dad , I'll wear two), then the short or long sleeve jersey (above 40 gets short sleeve, below gets the long sleeve), and then a wind-breaking layer. All my jerseys have pockets. If I need to stash my wind-breaker/rain jacket, then I just take it off, roll it up, and stuff it into one of the back pockets. I don't typically need to pull off more layers than that. Arm warmers and leg warmers, if I need to take them off, also get rolled up and stuffed in the pockets.

It probably means instant fredness, but consider getting a rear rack and mount a small bag on it.

One of the reasons I wear bibs is that I do not want to be constrained around the waist. I have trouble with fanny packs and when you just want to put those few extra items in it- just in case- it gets heavy. I use a wedge on the bike for puncture repairs and jersey pockets for wallet- camera and phone. If I need any more- like on a long ride- I will use the camelback for comfort.

I would suggest trailer. You can pack a rain coat, parka, plus a change of clothes and shoes for the coffee shop and carry mid-ride lunch food with grille for everyone.

When I do a decent ride in the winter months where the weather is undpredicatble and you can be miles from anywhere I take my Mountainsmith (https://www.mountainsmith.com/product...bCategory2Id=0)
got one after I saw a friend of mine skiing with his, It's great as it has plenty of space and has the added benefit of a shoulder strap which keeps it from slipping off the back if you're on rutted ground.

It'll also take two extra water bottles, and I'll bring with me waterproof overtrousers and a shell which is my "It's all gone to hell and I'm walking, clothing".

You won't buy a long sleeve jersey but you will buy a fanny pack? Suck it up and get jersey. Alternatively, just wear a long sleeve base layer and/or arm warmers. Also, you can wear a jacket over a SS jersey and use your jersey pockets under your jacket. You just have to reach under the jacket but its not hard; you get used to it.
