Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What bike computer to buy?

This sounds like a common topic but i could not find anything when I searched. Please respond with links if so.

Anyway, my wife is going to buy me a new computer for my bike for Christmas and she asked which one I wanted. I really have no experience (other than my mountain bike) with these. Does anybody have any recommendations? I mostly ride 40 to 60 mile rides in the foothills of Denver, CO. Lots of climbing and descending.

Is there anything wit a GPS or Altimeter? My wife is buying it so $ is not an issue, at least that's what she said anyway.

Thanks for the help.

Garmin Edge 305. $269 at www.geomangear.com . Best toy I've ever purchased for cycling.

Thank you! We agree.

We've sold somewhere between 5,500 and 6,000 of these rascals. Other people seem to agree with you too.

I've been in somewhat of a quandary over this topic myself for the past few months or so...

The question is wether to replace my flight deck (which has served me pretty well, actually) with a Garmin Edge, which is a pretty cool toy given I live in a part of New York with lots and lots of hills or buy what a serious cyclist really should have: a computer that measures power output.

Or course, powertaps are pretty damn expensive-- much more so than the Edge. And though your wife says that money isn't an issue, I bet she'd beg to differ if she really knew.

Does anyone know if there exists a bike comp that does it all? A Powertap with GPS would be pretty cool, I think.

I know how heart rate and cadence help in training but how does an awareness of altitude help?
Thanks

If you want something for the hills, how about a new wheelset?

who said anything about it helping? Knowing how much you've climbed helps to track what you have climbed though, and will help in the planning of routes.
