Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

With all these dozens of pages of shiny new uber-rides out there, my inner antiquitarian got to feeling guilty about the somewhat disreputable shape of my ride. With the Santa Fe ride coming up in a few days I decided to Do Something About It (tm)...

Off come the cages, wheels, and chain for a quick frame bath

Tucker makes sure that troublesome rear wheel is true

That filthy old bar tape with the rips from the faceplant last Christmas has got to go

That's about the best the old crate's looked in a couple of years - cleaned up, tuned up, and ready for the Santa Fe (half)Century on Saturday.

[edit]Huh... evidently I've not posted to this thread before (thought I had)... some details then. The frame's a late 80s Maruishi Tange #2 some hammerhead won in a race and sold on consignment at a local bike shop. When the price came down to a hundred clams I scarfed it up, and talked my family into buying me Ultegra for Christmas . Built the bike in the spring of 1990, and rode the living daylights out of it until the mid 90s when my kids were born. The riding's been much more intermittent since the girls came along, but I've got the bug again (now that my younger girl thinks she's the second coming of Jeannie Longo I have to ride more so she can't drop me!). I replaced the 42t inner ring with a 39t last summer as a concession to the fact that I'm not 25 any more.

The wheels are brand new Open Sports with butted spokes on my long unused 7sp Ultegra hubset, shod with a mismatched set of whatever 700x23 Contis the shop had in stock at the time. Modolo bar, 14cm TBone Road stem for my baboon-like arms, Shimano SPD-SL pedals, Selle Italia something-or-other saddle (cut me some slack, my memory's not what it used to be, and the labeling's worn off after umpty thousand miles). It's been in several wrecks and is covered with pits in the paint, scratches, and a couple prominent rust spots up near the head tube. Kinda like me, it's beat to heck but it keeps on rolling.

[edit again] Well d'oh! I thought I'd posted before... found it back on page 18. OOPS. Oh well, I love looking at all these wonders of ferrous magnificence.

What model Maruishi is that? With Tange 2 tubing is was towards the very top of their totem pole.

I've got some steel to toss in. This is my 1990's Chesini X-Uno with Campagnolo Centaur kit. Columbus SLPX tubing combo (SLX frame/SPX fork). The Chesini names and head tube logo are painted on.

Been shopping for this '86 Schwinn Peloton frame on Ebay & Craigslist for 4 years. Laced and trued the wheels myself, (my first wheelset from scratch):

This year/model was my first real bike, back when I was a $#it-hot USCF Junior and pre-aerobars-era triathlete:

According to the decal, the model was "RX-105". The original purchase was the bare frame/fork. I musta looked funny rolling down 13th Street on my old Raleigh with the Maruishi draped over my shoulder . While I'd kinda like to have a spiffy new titanium uberbike, this thing still suits me just fine. I am bouncing around the notion of stripping and repainting it, maybe black and gold with a McIntosh logo on the head tube .

Tange #2 was essentially identical to Columbus SL.

Not here... my road bike and the wife's early 90s Terry Chrom are the only steelies. Younger daughter's shiny new Giant road bike, and all our mountain bikes, are aluminum.

Except for the tires and Brooks saddle, I'm pretty sure my Dutch commuter is only steel.
Steel rims, steel cranks, steel drum-brake hubs, & steel bar-stem combo--I never have any problem setting off stoplight sensors with that mighty iron behemoth.
