Alright, what kind of water container is actually "safe"?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yea, kind of like when Costa Rica says they have an Army, the US Army, which would be there in about an hour if they needed them.

I have the flat top & the sports bottle top. Neither one leaks at all. Also, I don't have any trouble fitting the bottles in the standard $5 cages sold at my LBS, no rattling at all.

IME, you are right about the denting, but its not too bad. Once, I knocked an empty bottle with no cap off a high shelf onto a carpetted floor and it dented near the rim. Another time I dropped a half full bottle while riding on asphalt and ran it over with my rear tire...surprisingly it survived without any dents, but it did get scratched up (I was able to sand the scratches off). Go figure.

I got a Trek bat-cage, composite plastic that's as strong as the old metal cage I had and holds the bottle just fine, it even has a little lip on the top that fits into the ridge on the bottle and holds it nice and tight, hasn't bounced out yet.
Thanks for the cage tip -- I love my Sigg, everything is perfect about it, except for the rattling. I have left water in it overnight (cold temps out) and it tasted it like new the next morning.

This is quote from an article I can't find right now.

"Metal water bottles: Metal water bottles come in two variations: stainless steel and aluminum. Many aluminum bottles are lined with an epoxy or enamel, which is likely to contain BPA. Sigg, the Swiss company that produces a line of aluminum water bottles, recently produced test data showing that several new and used Sigg bottles did not leach BPA at levels greater than 2 ppb after three days of heating in nearly boiling water -- that's less leaching than polycarbonate bottles under the same condition. Stainless steel bottles, like Klean Kanteen, are not lined, so there's no risk of BPA exposure there."

I'll dig around and find the original article.

Agree with both of these sentiments. I'm keeping (and continuing to use) all of my bottles.

About a year ago I thought my water bottles started to look too used and chucked them. Since then I haven't bought any bottles at all. I went for a ride, stopped at 7-11 and bought 2 Gatorade drinks for a change. I finished them off and still had them in holder. And I thought I'll to wash them out and re-use them. They are free and don't have any after taste when you re-fill them.

I been re-using these kinds of bottles now for a while. I just fill them up with water or juice - whatever.

Maybe I'm weird or cheap but it got to be a habit.

As far as I understand these are quite the leachers, especially when exposed to sunlight. However, this is not exactly from a materials scientist, so if anyone wants to confirm and/or call me an idiot feel free.

Recent news is making the disposable bottles out to be the enemy even more so than nalgenes. Granted I'm not sure if its actually any worse than using the standard #7 plastics or if they're just making it sound worse since it's likely to affect so many more people. Either way I still trust the nalgenes more over disposables. Not that it matters as I tossed all of my beloved nalgenes figuring that after 2 years in the Arizona sun they had probably been heated to the leeching point about a million times over.

Are the Polar 24 oz bottles taller than regular ones? I saw this as a complaint on a review.

Of course you realize you're at a far greater risk of death from hyponatremia from the water in the bottle, than you are from cancer from the plastic making up the bottle.

I just put a new Poland Spring on my bike when I ride. Recycle it when done, someone gets a new plastic park bench. If you are reusing any bottle, you are dealing with either detergents to clean it or bacteria from not cleaning it well enough. For those that are OCP, you can take the green lable off if it clashes. Though you are stuck with the blue sport top.

So my Camelbak bottles aren't "safe" anymore? Well then, what are some relatively "safe" alternatives?
Your CamelBak bottles are fine, they're made from a copolyester material that is BPA-free. The #7 recycling code is a catchall for everything that doesn't fit into categories 1-6. As for a safe alternative, stick with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) (#4 code) and polypropylene (PP) (#5 code).

Also, polycarbonate (PC) water bottles, such as those being yanked off the shelves by Nalgene, are by and large harmless as the BPA in them is not soluble. They're being yanked off the shelves because of consumer fear. Basically it is cheaper to do something and appear to have the consumer's best interest at heart, as opposed to fight and try to educate them. If you try the latter, you will see your profits and market share erode as a competitor lines up and tells everyone that you're just in it for the money and don't care about the children

You guys do realise that the municipal water in most areas is far more unhealthy than anything these bottles would do.

That's like New Zealand letting the US provide most of its defence. Then it's able to afford free healthcare and education.

I just posted a review of the the Klean Kanteen on my blog here if any one is interested: https://austinbikeblog.org/?p=967.

Summary: I don't think they make good cycling water bottles.
