Weight Weenie Forte KMC Chain at Performance

Hi guys,

Does anyone have this chain?

https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=5134

It seems like a damn LIGHT one at 228g @ 114 links compared to even the KMC X10-SL Gold @250g...... The BEST thing about it is..... It's about $20 (compared to $100 chains that are 30g heavier)!!!!

I have an Ultegra groupset and I heard that KMC is the upgrade for Shimano (Wipperman for Campy). But according to these specs it should be a pretty good seller (and therefore should be in BF's search results). Is there something a muck here, does it shift horribly or is it loud?

Seems too good too be true....

Thanks

I have that chain and it is great. The weight is light, price is right and it even has a removable master link so you can remove the chain for cleaning. I am using it with Campy Chorus and it works great. Campy chains are $$$, good thing I found this chain...I didn't know about it for a while even though I bought a chain right next to it since when I saw the $20 price I thought it was a 8 or 9 speed chain.

I don't know the actual weight of the chain, but I bought based on the published weight, the mumblings about KMC being the OEM Shimano chain, etc., and the fact that it was $20 at performance.

I use them with my 10 speed Dura Ace and Sram Force equipped bikes. Everything shifts smoothly and the chain is nice and quiet too.

No problems at all over here. Just make sure the chain is cleaned and lubed regularly.

It's also cool because the chain has a removable master link so you can take the chain on/off with ease.

My scale says they lie.

Bought two of these chains. Seems like very good value, but, my scale says they lie about the weight.

My KMC X10SL which is finished much more nicely - with link - weighs 243 gms (3 for the link) on my scale.

The Forte KMC DX10SC chain which is finished much more crudely - with link - weighs 267 gms. The package says 228 gms!

I may take them back.

That's a very large discrepancy.

30g is a lot if you're a 200+ lbs cyclist desperately trying to build a WW sub-15 lbs bike to impress your friends

A whopping .05lb difference between the two chains!

+1
So what if its really 265-270 grams, that makes it the same weight or lighter than a DA chain and at 30% less cost. Plus no dealing this those breakaway replacement pins. Its a good deal all around. I use them on every bike, bought at the store for 19.99 @ on Tuesday morning so I got an extra 10% off ($18.00 each was a great deal, bought 5 of them on the spot!)

As others have mentioned the Forte chain at Performance is the KMC DX10 (SC). A wonderful chain that I have been using and recommending for quite some time as the chain to use on Shimano drivetrains.

I received a KMC DX10 SL from aham23 as payment for some work at some point. I have not put it on any rig yet. Not really in a hurry to. For some reason I don't like the idea of trying to save weight on a 10spd chain. I know it is most likely fine, but just not on my list of top 10 things to do.

Does it matter what chain you use for campy or shimano? Or will either chain work fine with either setup?

Or is it dependent on the cassette?

I'm asking in general. The kmc says it works with everything.

Campy's "old" 10 spd standard was/is wider than Shimano's 10spd width (6.2mm IIRC). Campy's "Ultra Narrow" drops in a little narrower than that I believe.

Narrower chain will always be able to run on either. Campy didn't change their components...only made a narrower chain when they went to "Ultra Narrow". KMC DX10 made to "Shimano standard" so it will work on all drive trains.

I have heard of DX10s causing some noise on Campy drivetrains. No first hand experince though.
