Is it worth the buy?
Hey everyone,
I recently got interested in rode biking but haven't really tried it much. Instead of buying a really nice first bike I want to buy a used/beater one so I will know if I want to have a road bike or not. Then I can invest in a nicer one. I am in high school and don't have enough money to buy a 1000 dollar bike then change my mind.
Here is the ad, tell me what you think:
https://knoxville.craigslist.org/bik/502102144.html
I am a size 52 frame so this would be stretching it a tad, but I'm not sure if it would be too bad. You can tell me if I'm right or wrong.

I can't guess what it is worth to you - eBay is a good market indicator.
I'd offer $100 for it - since I'd have to make lots of changes, starting with the wheels(if they are the old Matrix, they're probably cracked), new tires, bar & stem etc.

Wait. Check ebay and you can probably pick up a nicer and newer one for that money, especially in that size. It may take a little while, but to me it seems worth it. I too am in high school on i tight budget and just found what I needed - I had about $350 to work with, so if you shop around you'll probably find what you want eventually (It took me 6 months). Good luck though. Hope you enjoy cycling.

Nobody can tell you if it's worth it or not from just that ad. You'd really have to see it in person.

The issue with bikes this old it whether or not they need a major tuneup and/or overhaul, tires, etc. These things can add up to a few hundred very fast and you will have wished you had $500. I was in your position about a month ago and decided to wait till I could save a little more money. I had a influx that made $500 available to me and that was enough to get alot of bike. I still spend about $180 on a fitting and shorts. I already had shoes and pedals. That is another $160 in my case. You will need a helmet and will want a computer too. Add another $100.

Well intentioned comment and you are correct. However my comments were from my perspective only and I can see enough from the pics. I'd pay mainly for the frame, then part replacements for me to get it rideable and enjoyable would probably add another $500 minimum.
