vertical storage

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

vertical storage

Ok, so I rent an apartment right now in college. I cant put anything into the walls bigger than a thumbtack, and was wondering if anyone had tips for vertical storage options (as in one of the tires is up in the air, not stacked bikes)? Ive got three bikes, and leaning my rain bike and junker bike up against each other is nicking their paint.

any links to cheap products pictures of homemade solutions would also be appreciated! (homemade solutions prolly are best, I am in college and broke)

Didn't have time to make a CAD mockup for you, but here's the best I could do using the almight PAINT:

It uses 2x4s (4-5 10ft sections), a large handful of wood screws, a drill, a saw, and a screwdriver. And 4 "U" shaped, rubber coated hooks.

I've had a polecat bike/ski storage rack for about forever. I got it when in college to hold my bikes and skis in the corner of my dormroom. It now is in the garage to hold 2 of our bikes and both pairs of skis in a small space.

[edit]

This rack also doesn't put anything permanent on the walls ceiling or floor. It works by pushing against the floor and ceiling to hold it in place.

So this style won't work for you? Bad back or just really low ceiling?

The above is probably the best idea.

If you have hard ceilings, you've probably seen this one (below); very popular:

Just put hooks in the wall and buy a tube of tooth paste before you move out for the holes. That what I did in the dorms.

This is what I've got. Actually have 3 bikes hanging on it (two on the front, one on the back), and one more on the ground behind it under the one bike hanging on the back.
