Clothes for 50 degree mornings?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Clothes for 50 degree mornings?

Temperatures during morning 6am commute (13 miles) have dropped to a staggering 50 degrees (Arizona). I'm puzzled as to which clothes I should wear. If I wear arm warmers, my arms get sweaty within 20 minutes. If i wear a long-sleeve jersey, I'm freeeezing cold for the first 20 minutes.

Is it expected that you can't be a good temperature from start to finish? Should I just start with arm warmers or a jacket and strip them off as I go? Should I just harden the F up and ride in bibs only?

I'll send you some of my as-of-yet unused warm-weather cycling gear if you send me 50 degree temps

High of 24 tomorrow...

You should be cold for the first few minutes.

Start with a big hill. That warms me up in 5 minutes as it's on my commute. Shorts, Jersey, Summer gloves, Helmet, regular cotton socks. Keeps me good till low 40s.

Arm warmers and maybe a vest. Strip off as you get warmer; the arm warmers you can just push down to your wrists.

This is the problem. I live at the top of a hill that takes me 10 minutes to speed down. I see people with tights, jackets, beanies, and full-finger gloves and I wonder if I'm doing something wrong... guess not. Thanks for the advice.

Just wear whatever makes you comfortable. Personal temperature is relative.

Rode Sunday in Tucson, AZ. Temp around 52. Wore armwarmers, jersey, tights and a sleeveless nylon vest. Was cool for a bit, then warm for a bit. Zipper on vest lets you regulate temp. As said, push down arm warmers or take 'em off.
You'll always feel cool for the first 15 minutes til you get up body temp a bit.
Pedal on!

base layers, SS jersey, arm warmers and maybe a vest. You can unzip the vest when you get warm adn push down the arm warmers as well.

You could also do some pushups in the warmth of your house and a couple of lunges till you get warm, then when you go outside it will feel nice

OK, I'll pile on.

I would love 50 degree temps. We are currently under an ice storm warning where I live.

50 degrees and he's complaining? I rode in 32 last week. Can't now 'cause there's an ice storm - expected to reach 1 inch thick.

But to answer his question - arm warmer and just roll them down. Or, short sleeve jersey with one of those really thin jackets on top. Strip and stick them into your pocket as you go.

As previously stated, wind vest. They keep the wind off (critical on that downhill) but can be stowed easily for the rest of the ride. A wind jacket would work too. Very thin but takes the edge off the wind part of the ride.

The rest of it... I prefer being hot but then I don't have to walk into a class when I get off my bike. So that's up to you.

Temperatures are relative as are tolerances. While most of you may scoff at 50F as being cold, try riding in their summer temps.
Anyhow, I also live at the top of a hill. While many recommend dressing so that you are cold at the start this does not work for me. I dress to be warm. Otherwise riding down a hill for 10 min at 15F gets painful. At the bottom I remove a layer.

At 50F I would wear arm warmers, leg warmers, something to cover my ears (I have insanely sensitive ears), jersey, and shorts. It has been a while since I had 50F temps and I can not remember if I would throw a jacket over it. Anyhow, you can also purchase thermal tops to throw over your jersey if you feel the need.

50: sunny, just arm warmers and ss jersey. Cloudy, and/or rainy, leg warmers too. If your arms get hot, push down the arm warmers!

As a cyclist, you are not exempt from sweating just because it's Fall!

+1

Depending on wind speed and amount of sunshine, I go to the vest and arm warmers between 50-55.

Long sleeves start in the mid-40s.

I add tights closer to 40.

I love my chest to be warm. I grew up with severe adolescent asthma(which I have outgrown), so I'm trained to keep my chest as warm as possible. The vest works wonders.

I could not care less about my legs. Enough spinning will warm them up quickly.

Damn people. The OP is from a warm climate.

I am from a slightly cooler climate and the temps in Colorado annoy me. It's not even that cold here but it can be from time to time.
Though my company is based in Milwaukee and they find my complaints amusing as well.

Yeah, my lunchtime ride is going to be about 79F.

Yesterday I did commute in at 39F in the dark, with rain. No complaints from me.
