Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes, but in the costs of $ per mile, the costs of these bicycles is much, much lower than your car. Your costs per ride that you estimated for your bicycles is based off of their recent purchase price - but are you replacing all of your bikes every year? No** These bikes can last you years, and years. Costs of maintenance for these bikes? It can be super low, especially if you maintain them yourself. Initial costs are high (like getting tools, stand, etc:.), just as it would for a car, BUT you'll be getting your costs way down in the long run.

There's more I'd type here, but looking outside the day is *gorgeous* and I just want to go out for a ride now, so c'ya!

**(and if you do, just send the old ones my way, I'll take them off your hands for you. But I'll charge you the handling fee, that's all)

You have triplets? Wow.

I've got a baby on the way, which I'm sure will take over in the cost department. However, at the current time, the bike is a little lower on the list, even without us owning a house yet. 2 cars, a bunch of savings/stocks/CDs/IRAs, and a lot of drums and other percussion equipment (I'm a professional musician). The computer was actually a little less, but gets more use than almost all of those things.

Are we talking the stuff I bought or the wife bought? As a young bachelor, I never envisioned owning a lot of the stuff I own now. Kids don't help, either. But, they are worth far more to me than anything else. After that, it would be the house although, technically, the bank owns most of it. Then the cars. If I win the lottery, I'll buy enough bike schwag to stun PCad (which is a hell of a whole lot) and who knows what else.

Don't forget the other costs of owning a dog. We've replaced all the floors in the house. In my case, the bikes still come out to be more. My bike was worth about as both cars combined, but we bought a new car in August, so that costs the most.

I haven't had my violin appraised in over 25 years, but I expect that is likely worth more than all my bikes combined.

I noticed a few with Acoustic guitars. Specifically I'd love a J-200.

I wish I had a Gibson, without a case, who cares if I don't have a tanned look on my face. Ill fitting clothes, blending in the crowd, fingers so clumsy, with my voice too loud. I just don't care..

But I'm One. (and I want one)

I would bet it would be more. I had a friend in grad school who owned a bow that was worth way more than my car. Somewhere in the 10k range, IIRC. Crazy.

Besides the house and the car, the more expensive single items are my computer and my good tuba (~$2400 for the 'puter, and $6000+ for the tuba, case, and accessories -- which was pretty good as far as new tubas go).

I'm still at the cheap end of the bicycle scale.

It got moved out when 'critical listening'......

This is what it was like when just being used for background music etc, the right hand door is not used.

It's now on the other side of the room, the christmas tree is in that corner.

I'd like a bike for christmas. ( I had to mention bike to keep it on topic...)

It just so happens that the item that I value the most happens to be the 2nd most expensive item I own.

Someone mentioned getting a picture of the demograph, I'm a grad-student living at home making <20k/year, so obviously I don't have many possessions.

+1 - but I pay 3X more for his daycare than I did for my Engineering degree....and all they do is keep him from dying a few hours a day.

Everone always says "I'm saving for college." but you never hear anyone who says, "I'm saving for daycare."

Bike my most expensive possession, I wish. Just bought this watch for a price that would get me 5 top of the line Trek Madones. I have 6 nice bikes hanging in my basement, I ride them all, total cost under 30k. With this watch I now have 11 machanical watches total cost 140k, they stay in the watch safe.

I'm sure if you ask me the same question after I'm married (if I ever get married) and have kids I'd put the bike pretty low on the list. But right now, it makes me happy and I'm glad to spend my disposable income (what little I have) on it.

Single and in University ... but I'm not a 20 year old. I'm 40, and I've been there, done that with the whole marriage thing. Now I'm living life the way I want to live it ... with my bicycle on the top of the list.
