Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tour De Cure 2008

Hey, I'm George. Just after my 13th birthday last year, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Since then, I have gotten into serious road cycling-- and love it! I use an insulin pump to manage my diabetes, but wouldn't a cure be much better? Through some research I found the Tour De Cure. It gives me an opportunity to ride my bicycle and help raise money for a cause I'm passionate about. Now, I need to raise money for the event. Every dollar counts and will be greatly appreciated by not just me, but the millions of other people who are affected by diabetes whether they have it, or a loved one has it. If you decide that you would like to help the cause and sponsor me, here's a link to my Tour De Cure web page.

https://main.diabetes.org/goto/georgeike

Thanks,
George

I will help you! Btw - I volunteer for the ADA; best of luck with the struggle w/ diabetes. Keep riding, and stay healthy!

Note to all BF members: ride the Tour de Cure! There's most likely one in your area this year - https://diabetes.org/tour. Great charity ride.

I think that the link I had posted to my Tour De Cure webpage wasn't right. I just fixed it.

George Bike (your name?),

You're going on 14 years and about to do the Tour de Cure? That's great! How many miles do you plan to go? Are your parents helping out in any way? How are they helping out?

I turned 14 in September and I'm doing a metric century. Haha my parents are giving me a ride to the high school where the ride starts, that's about it. Oh, and my name is George Ike, not bike haha.

Oh! Now I do. It's kind of funny because my middle name is the location of the Cannondale factory.

If the south Carolina chapter wasn't so damned inept at putting on their ride, they'd get my support. I'm trying to go to Indianapolis this year for their ride at THE Speedway.

Thank you so much thomson! I have raised the goal to $250. I like how you guys on the forums have already gotten me to the original goal, but my family and friends have not done anything haha.

No, I've never heard of them. That's really cool! It's really good to know there's a lot of other Type 1 cyclists out there.

I'm planning on riding Tour de Cure this year. It will be my first time.

I'm doing the one in Harmony, PA north of Pittsburgh, and I'm trying to put together a big Burrito Restaurant Group corporate team as well, although I haven't exactly broken that news to the owners of big Burrito.

It's not 'til June. I gots time.

Hey George! Good luck with your ride. I'll be sure to put you one step closer to reaching your goal. I think others should do the same and support you. It's great that your taking the initiative to go out and do a metric century. Once again, good luck.
