Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

STI SHIFTERS: Can I use double shifters (Dura-Ace) for a triple?

Hope everyone is stoked for Christmas (or at least the few days off).

Quick question here - I have a Allez circa 2001 with Tiagra front and rear derailleurs, and Tiagra brifters. It's got a 9-speed cassette in the back and a triple ring in the front. I recently bought Dura-Ace ST-7700 brifters, and just realized that the left (front derailleur) brifter only works with a double, not a triple front derailleur. Could I adjust the limit screws on the front derailleur so that it only shifts to two rings (preferably the granny gear and the middle ring)? And I am correct in assuming that the right (rear) brifter will work as a replacement?

Thanks and cheers,

-Frederik

Yes, and yes.

I'm wondering why you upgraded the shifter to Dura Ace, but I'm also afraid of the answer.

yes but according to Leonard Zinn, you can use that double as a triple but you lose the trim adjustment. I've never tried it so you mileage may vary but I'd believe him.

Thanks for the input, Az B and Rutnick! Actually, to answer Az B's question, my Tiagra shifters have been giving me trouble shifting - it takes several tries for them to engage the derailleurs (and no, it's not the trim adjustment). So, it's not due to snob factor. But thanks for checking. I got them both used for relatively cheap too.

It's interesting that there's been a lot of discussion (threads) about a triple brifter being okay for a double FD (since a lot of people go triple to double worry about cost), but not whether a double-specific brifter (i.e. Dura-Ace) can be adjusted to work with a triple chainring. We shall see. I'll post back when I get a chance to put them on.

Thanks again and have a merry Christmas.
