Any Speedplay Pedal Comments?
Anyone out there that would suggest Speedplay pedals over other brands?

Absolutely love them... someone will inevitably say "hot spot" I say BS. The unlimited float has been a godsend to my knees beat up after years of running. I have used Times, Dura ace, campy, ritchey. I will use nothing but speedplay from here on out.

I switched to Ultegra SPD-SL's with a little wider platform for my E-width feet, and the hotspots went away.
However, if I hadn't been getting hotspots, I'd still be riding Speedplays....maybe. Their cleats are the worst.

I would. I've been using Speedplay X1's for a few years and just switched to Speedplay Zero's this year. I have bad knees and for me they work since they allow me a lot of range (relative to other pedals)

Throw the stick!!!!
Yep, about every 10,000 miles I have to get new cleats. I also have spray a little lube on mine once every month or so and add a little grease a couple of times a year. It takes about a minute to grease both pedals. Way too hard to maintain.

No they're not....
- actually if you're not completely inept mechanically you can get them to work beautifully. They are worth it. They really are.
The easy test is that I have told people forever that they are "allright." Nothing special. ....and yet it is the pedal system that I keep sticking with.
Pedals are like saddles, and shifter hoods and positions. They are personal preferences. If you don't like them you won't know until you try. That's what E-Bay is for. Sorry man.

Two sides to the coin. They are fussy, primarily on set-up and cleanliness, but worth it IMHO.

I like them - - but be careful - - because of the extra float a slight twist isn't going to disengage your foot - - I've seen more than one person fall over when they stop because of this.

I love them. I agree with monk that disengaging takes practice, but only a little getting used to. Love my pedals

I just switched from speedplays to the Shimano SPD. The main reason is because I like the larger platform better. I didn't have hotspots but there was definitely some flex in the sole of the shoe I didn't like, which the larger platform helped. This will happen when used with shoes that are not the stiffest. I had problems when I switched to the sidi genius 5.5 (not their stiffest sole).
If you use speedplays, just buy really stiff shoes and spend some time to set up the cleats properly and they will work great. They are the easiest pedals to clip in and out of.

Dang I most be the only person that hated speed plays. I used them for a few months and was constantly coming uncliped when I was pedaling hard. I'm still trying to sell them on CL
