cleat wear

How does one determine when to change cleats---I use Shimano SPD SLS---- seem to last forever if you let them,but they get very chopped up after awhile yet still work ok

i change my cleats about once every 8-10 months. cheaper than a visit to the ER.

I check my SPD-SL cleats regularly and they have never looked too bad. I change them yearly anyway.
