Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Powertap sucks the joy out of recreational riding

When I was full-on into racing, I loved my powertap. I could put together a good, focused training plan, and I found my strength and fitness improving really quickly. It's just such a great tool for racing.

Now that work has conspired to keep me out of racing for at least another year or so, I find myself hating my powertap. Here I am, out to enjoy an hour alone on the bike--something that's in painfully short supply these days--and my PT is there to tell me that I really, really suck compared to when I was racing just 5-6 months ago.

On my last ride, I just left the damned CPU at home. When time is short I don't want to know my power numbers. I just want to know that I'm being less of a slug than I was yesterday, and that it's fun as hell to just hop on the bike and ride.

Anyone want a campy-compatible PT SL?

Up until 2 years ago, I always stressed about getting the saddle time in. Not sure why other than I am a competitive person by nature.

Now, I just try to enjoy it...and honestly, it's working. And while I'm only 80-90% of what I can be on a bike, I enjoy it a LOT more and feel I'm never too far away from 95-100% that I couldn't get there on fairly short notice. All I'd need is a reason....

That auction didn't sell but they went in another for $1100.

Unless I'm a total BF newb and those aren't the ones you're talking about... That is entirely possible.

Doesn't this fall into the same category as learning to use your TV remote control to switch stations?

Take the head unit off your bicycle DP.

I never fitted a computer to the bike I bought this summer and loved every minute of what could have been a very tedious amount of training. I stopped worrying about mileage, speed and average speed and just went as hard as I could with the time I had.

I've since bought a nice HRM and will use only that to gauge my ride intensity next season, and even with that it'll probably be to keep my HR below 200, as I have a tendency to push myself too hard.

Yeah, the Zipps have already sold--needed the cash for other things and didn't need a pair of race wheels for my twice-a-week strolls...

No dice. The Pinarello is too sweet to ride, just tooling around or otherwise...

Hehehe...

In a couple years when my schedule eases up and I actually have the time to dedicate again, I'll be making about $60K more per year than I am now... Then I'll get to be one of those old slow fatazzes who shows up at a cat 4 race on a $10K bike and bunches the panties of so many BF'ers. By then power meters will have had a couple more generations to develop, and I'll have the cash to spend with impunity.

THAT's how I plan to enter old age.

Or, you can be like me, getting close to 50 yet crushing the souls of the youngsters around me - I get hours of excercise every day. So easy to keep in shape and as long as I keep pushing it - I don't get slower.

Imagine how disturbing it is to the youngsters to have an old geezer with white hair leaving them behind like someone threw out an anchor...

Almost enough for me to feel remorse - almost.

Why don't you swap wheels, put a magnet on the non-PT rear, and set the PT to "cycle computer mode?" Save some wear and tear on those PT bearings. Just go to the cadence view and hold down select for 2s -- the word "WATTS" vanishes and you get no more bad news

Damocles, DrP: I am here, ready to buy either one of your PT's at well below market value.

Just trying to help.

If I get some decent cash from selling the PT, a pair of campy zondas and a BD fixie might be in the cards.
