Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Budget Build...Screw Classic! *56K*

I purchased this (Japanese built '91 Schwinn Paramount) locally mid summer as my first steel rig. The plan was to upgrade it to full Ultegra 9; some hemmed and hawed at the idea. After thinking long and hard about it I decided to go ahead and upgrade it. It's not quite done so no need to point out the unfinished bits. There's more snow in the forecast for tomorrow so I figured I take her around the block.

Here's what's spankin' new on the bike

-Stem
-Headset & Spacers
-Fork (Nashbar Special)
-Brake cables and housings
-50T ring
-Front Derailleur
-Seatpost
-Rear PR2

Everything else is lightly used to heavily used and has come off one of my other bikes; the calipers are original, RX100. Most of the group set including the wheels came off my '04 Fuji Team issue...its going 10spd this year.

That actually turned out pretty nice. I wonder if it would look even better if you went with more classic bend bars. Gives me ideas on what to do with an old aluminum frame I've got laying around.

Ditch the left brifter and put on a DT shifter for the FD. I've got the hots for that kind of setup.

Nicely done. I hope you're planning on getting some brake pads for the front.

Thanks for the replies!

I never thought about using a DT shifter for the FD so that's an idea. I also thought about classic bend bars but I didn't want to spend too much upgrading a '91 bike. I would have used the orginal ones but they're only 40cm wide and I ride 42's. I'm sure I'll make more changes before it's all said and done. The current wheels weighs about 1600g; I'd like something a bit lighter in the rear so I may build up a new rear wheel. Can't wait to take it out for its first group ride.

The holders and pads are on order along with some Velocity Aero Heads. The Aero Heads are backordered so the order is in limbo right now. I installed the crappy block pads just to go around the corner really .

The plan was to clean and save them...so far only the saving part has happened. Not sure how I'd feel parting them out.

Nice. I had the exact same bike in 1994. RX100 throughout and, while heavy, the bike really did ride well.

Are the hubs RX100? I may be interested in them if you're looking to part it out...

The original wheels have been trued and are sitting in the basement. They do have RX100 hubs but I don't think I'm going to sell them. If anything I'll mount some cheepo Bontrager tires I have laying around and use them as a trainer set.

What are you doing with the stock saddle?

Hmmm, I decided to keep '84 Trek vintage, but the idea of modernizing it has been itching at me. Eventually, it might happen.

Nice build! I really like paramounts. I had the chance to but one of them with 8 or 9 speed STI ultegra, but the frame was just too damaged so I had to let it go.

Enjoy the ride!

I will enjoy the ride, thanks. If I were to let go of any part it would be the saddle...let me think on it for a bit.
