I need bike sizing advice, please.
The bike is for my 17 y/o son. I don't want to spend too much since I don't know if he'll even like riding. I'll buy used from craigslist or ebay. I really don't want to walk into a LBS, get help with sizing, then don't buy from them. Maybe you all can give me an idea as to a proper bike size for him.
He is 6', weighs 210 lb and wears a 32" inseam pants. I'm 5'8", wear a 30" inseam and I ride a 54 cm. Do you think a 56 is right or should I look for a 58 cm bike? Thanks for your help!

just have him test ride some bikes at the LBS and say you'll think about it. if they treat u well, remember that and support them in the future for other purchases.

Different bikes "fit" different. A 56 may be right for one bike but a 58 might be right with another bike. Bring your son when you check out the used bikes.

56-58 cm is the right range for his seat tube. I'd measure top tubes for something between 57 and 58 cm, definitely no shorter than 57.

The formula that I see most often is inseam in CM taken without shoes, feet 6" apart, multiplied by .67. My best guess is a 56 for him.

There are some good online fit calculators - competitive cyclist has a good one. It's a good start.
17 has the advantage of being flexible enough to ride anything close but disadvantage that he probably isn't done growing yet.
Good luck, hope he gets hooked.

I'd go with a 58.
Fill out these forms and decide for yourself. I'd go with either the Eddy or French fit.Without a doubt do not go smaller than their Competitive fit.
