Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What to look for in a beginners road bike..tips for buying.

Does anyone have any pointers, tips or links to some good reading concerning road bikes.

So many brands are out there and commonly talked about here, it's hard to get a feel of what good compared with other components in the same price range.

After I bought my MTB from my LBS, i felt cheated. (Way before I found this forum) I'm sure it was this particular shop, but i feel i paid way too much for my entry line trek. Worse than the price though, was the rude service. (I was a clyde at the time , so i tried out tons of fits to get something comfy )

Any tips to prevent me from making the same mistakes when selecting a road bike would help me out a bunch!

Most important thing to look for is how well the bike fits you. Road bikes come in several different geometries (in addition to sizes) these days. Buy the style that fits your body dimensions, fitness level, and riding style the best.

just make sure you can test-ride it first. this early in the game, it's not so much what bike, but how it feels to you. i suggest starting w/ a cheaper (maybe steel) bike, such as a used Bianchi. that way when you're ready to upgrade you won't break the bank.

(and then learn basic bike-fixing methods, so you can stay out of the LBS as much as possible)

get at least 105. I have heard of plenty of people complaining about sora and tiagra but I rarely hear complaints about 105. 105 is worth it because you won't feel the strong urge to upgrade in the future which will save you money by already having decent components.
