Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How not to start the Year's ride log Part II

After last weekend's misfortunate on my old vintage steel Barracuda Mk.I, this morning I decided to play it safe and take the Fuji Team Issue out instead.

Well, I must have done something recently to really anger the cycling gods, because 10 miles into my planned 30 mi ride with the Richardson Bike Mart ride, I started experiencing bad shifts, then the chain started to jam up as I pedaled. We had just started from a stop light and knew something was seriously screwed up. I coasted into a turn off and quickly examined the chain, finding a link that had half way separated. I was however instantly thankful I had not decided to go do the hill climbing route today solo!

Thankfully one of the RBM ride leaders (John Sexton for anyone local) stopped and had a chain tool with him. We worked on the chain, trying to get the link back together, but deciding that was a lost cause we pulled out a link and got the chain back together. I opted to cut my ride short and rode back to the shop with another cyclist who happened to be heading in my direction as I started off.

Now back home, brand new chain on the Fuji, more than a few dollars less in the pocket book, but in one piece and not still walking home in my road shoes. All in all, it could have been worse. But seriously, could I get one week without a mechanical in 08, I certainly hope so.

I had pretty much the same thing happen during my first ride of the year after I got back from Philadelphia and the ugly holiday travel (I was delayed in getting home by, imagine this, a mechanical problem on the airplane). I was at the Austin Veloway, and had a link separate or something, snag on the rear derailleur, and end up twisting it sideways against the frame, breaking completely off the bike in the process.

I had the joy of replacing two spokes in my rear wheel (harder than I thought it'd be), the derailleur bracket, and the chain, and I'm still waiting on Performance bike to get my Ultegra long cage derailleur. WTF Performance, you're the walmart of bike parts, and you can't get that part in a week's time?

I need badly to train for my trip to California next month, and the only bike I can actually ride is my old diamondback MTB.

I'm really lucky I wasn't hammering when it happened and didn't put enough pressure on the cranks to bend anything. Nearly didn't have the speed to coast myself to the next turn off the road I was on. Guess it is what I get for deciding I was going to break off the front of the group after that signal. I had just gotten clipped in when I realized something was wrong. I am going to be putting the bike up on the stand later next week and checking the adjustment of both derailleurs just to be safe.

I think you need to do more PBA rides - I do not recall such issues on any of the PBA rides you did

That said, tempo ride tomorrow morning at 8:00 sharp!

You know, I was thinking the same thing today. I actually saw the Tweener ride going the other way on Renner as I was bent over the bike trying to help get the chain back together. Depending on start time temps will determine if I make it tomorrow morning.
