Cannondale crankset question
Both Cdale cranksets use that oversized Cannondale BB, right? The pricier Cdale bicycles come with the crankset with the aluminum arms, the less expensive bikes have the all carbon crankset. Is there a difference in performance/weight between the two? I like the look of the carbon Cannondale crankset, that's what is on my Six13 TT bicycle.

cannondale put out an article a while ago....
https://www.cannondale.com/bikes/06/c.../si_crank.html
go to "the bottom line"
apparently the carbon version is only 11g lighter than the Dura Ace system and equal stiffness, whereas the aluminum version is 85g lighter and 10% stiffer than dura ace

that being said though, I don't really think that a 10% increase in stiffness and 74g weight reduction over the carbon version is going to mean the world to the average cyclist, myself included, so either or is a fantastic crankset.

99% of the rigidity in that Cdale crankset is attributable to the bigger BB. Unless you're putting down 1000+ watts (I won't be) I seriously doubt the crankarm material means anything.

I recently had to make a decision on this when I ordered my Supersix. For around $400 more, I could have upgraded to the aluminum hollowgram cranks. I determined that my $400 would be better spent elsewhere like shoes, pedals, clothing, helmet, rollers etc.

I have had both of these on my Six13 team. It originally came with the carbon crankset and due to a catastrophic failure the cannondale rep replaced my damaged frame and upgraded me to the Alloy SI crankset. There is a very noticeable difference in stiffness You also have the ability to switch out chainrings, I ride a compact on hilly rides and switch to standard on flatter rides, by swapping out the spider. with the carbon crankset you have to have two complete cranksets if you want to switch them around.

I've ridden both and currently have the latest version of the Carbon cranks on my System Six. I still have the carbon cranks because they came on my 2006 Six13. When I got a System Six in 2007 I was given just the frame/forks/stem/headset and I transferred the parts from my Six13. About a month ago the pedal insert came loose and the Cannondale rep warrantied the cranks for me with the newer version of the carbon cranks. The aluminums are way stiffer. One reason I am excited about getting a Super Six this year is because I am getting a complete bike and will get the aluminum cranks.

You can upgade this to the lighter hollograms with the ceramic bearings...I would have but my current hollograms are only about 14 months old.

I've been riding pricey racing bikes for 20 years. I have never been able to perceive a difference in crank stiffness between bicycles. BB rigidity yes. Crank stiffness, no.

These are really two different cranksets, it is not just the arms. I have not compared the 2007 version of the carbon SI but on the 2006 crank the arms and drive side, spider and integrated arm, are removable by hand when you remove the crankbolts whereas the alloy version the arms have to be extracted with a tool, they are on there tight. this alone adds to the overall stiffness. then factor in the different materials. In my opinion the alloy version is a much nicer crankset, lighter and stiffer.
