Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ksyrium Wheels

I have a set of the Ksyrium sl wheels they Have about 6k miles on them. I Think the rear wheel has a noise coming from the hub! Possibly the PAWLS are making noise? It seems like the noise apears when the crank comes around over the top and pressure is put on! Soft pedaling and slow speeds does not bring on the click noise. Has anyone else experience this type of problem??

Could be spokes rubbing?try a drop of oil on each point of contact. Also sure it's not your pedals or cranks?Maybe just flex if it happens when you hammer out of saddle.

It could also be a loose cassette lock ring. I had that issue recently. The noise is now gone.
If it's inside the hub, they are easily serviceable. I usually like to use heavy grease to get rid of the pawls clic-clic noise, my SLs are as smooth as butter.

Skewer is telling you it needs just a little lube. I've stopped lots of peoples clicks and creaks by suggesting this. One was so bad from the front you'd have sworn the fork was about to crack in half.

Well i lubed the front and rear skewers and still have a click,BUT i put the bike in a trainer and the click is not there!!! Even at high outputs!!! Whats that about?? Maybe the trainer holding devise is tighting up inside the hub when holding the rear wheel??

never use heavy grease on pawls. grease is for the bearings. heavy grease will keep the pawls from closing and with a aluminum cassette body, if the pawl is held open, it will strip the cassette body.

if there is no noise while on the trainer, it could be that there is a cracked bearing. on a trainer, the your weight is being supported on by the trainer and not the bearings.

I guess the grease I use is not too heavy as I can clearly hear the pawls locking the freehub body but it's a more subtle clic noise as with most Ksyrium wheels.

FreeHubs too Free?

You may want to e-mail Mavic and use what they suggest. They may sell small qty. of the grease that is used when they built the freehub.
Over the past 15 years of riding with brifters in a hilly area, 4K miles is the max that I have gotten out of a 'freehub' maybe I should try a set of Mavic wheels next or service my freehubs more often.
A 'freehub' going 'free' when it should not, could be painful.

My front ES wheel was making a similar noise: if the QR lever isn't tight, it will do that. Tighten it a turn or so, refasten the lever and see what happens.

I recommend him the exact same thing,it happened to me several times and by "readjusting" the QR the problem was solved, just readjust and tight, readjust and tight, readjust and tight...

Mavic recommends Pedro's Road Rage as the lube to use when rebuilding the freehub on Ksyriums. They also recommended not using grease but I do put a little grease around the nylon seal and it has never been a problem.

Fixed problem :)

Well its finally fixed!!!! It was a loose rear derailer hanger!!! so i tightened the set screw. Funny how these noise problems travel around the bike. You just have to keep trying to eliminate different things and ask questions! Thanks to all for the help! P.S This forum is AWESOME!!
