Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are the holes on the shoe the same for LOOK & SPD road pedals?

Yep, SPD-SL, SPD-R, and LOOK all take the same drilling pattern.

Do road shoes and MTB shoes have the same hole patterns?

Most road shoes are 3 hole, most mtb are 2. Before someone says that SPD's can be 2 hole road pedals I'd like to point out that SPD's (the 2 hole metal ones, not the 3 hole plastic ones) are a miserable choice for a road cleat and a search will turn up a million reasons why.

Some Road shoes come with the 3-hole Look/road and 2-hole SPD/MTB patterns. If you decide (against jccaclimber and many others) to go with a 2-hole pattern for road biking, you'd might as well get a MTB or touring shoe with a recessed sole so you can at least realize the advantage of better walkability.

Isn't SPD-R that short lived weird one with the two holes? I believe Lance refused to use those SPD-R pedals, preferring to stick with his 90's era Shimano-made-by-Look pedals, which finally gave us the SPD-SL.

You're right, SPD-R isn't what I thought it was...funky...

SPD-R = great on the track. Extremely difficult to pull a foot out accidently. Many of the track sprinters use them.

Shimano still sells the SPD-R? I thought they were done with it. The Shimano road shoes certainly aren't drilled for them anymore.

Or is it a track thing and you have guys going on Ebay or buying NOS parts and hording them?
