Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

10 spd crank w/9 speed everything else?

I think the subject says it all. I bought some new pedals and found that my old ones are completely frozen stuck. I twisted a brand new friggin hex socket and impaled my hand on four teeth of the chainring trying to get them out so I've given up and am looking for a new crank. (mine is cheap, heavy, creaky and too short anyway) I can't afford new everything atm but might piece-meal it if I can. If not, no big deal but just wondering if it's a decent option.

Here's a tip for getting off frozen pedals: Use an old seat post (not carbon) and put it on the end of your allen to get some extra leverage. I thought there was no possible way to get my pedals off of my old bike, I even was hammering the allen really hard and it wouldn't budge. But the extra leverage works better than the blunt force of a hammer. Give it a try.

First off, if you can get a 15mm pedal wrench (or a normal 15mm wrech) that's WAY easier. There's a reason shop pedal wrenches are around a foot long. Second, if allen keys are your only option and you twist off an allen wrench you may get allen sockets, they tend to be a bit stronger. On another note I'm running a 10sp ultegra crank and rings with a 9sp DA cassette/sram chain and it works just fine.

Go to home depot and have one of the guys give you a piece of scrap metal pipe like 3-4 feet, wide enough to fit the wrench. You should have enough torque with the cheater bar to get the pedal off. increasing the lever arm increases the torque. Also make sure you're turning the pedal the correct way. The left pedal is threaded opposite to the right.

you pull pedals backwards to get them off.

I've even had 8 speed bikes that I have converted to 9 speed without changing the Cranks so There isa lot of leeway on width of rings.
