Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BB Creak on Trainer?

So I have a Scott CR1 Pro and a Kurt Kinetic Rock n Roll Trainer combo that I've been using for about 2 weeks and I love 'em both. However, sometimes I hear some creaking from the BB area that doesn't sound good. If I spin very smoothly w/o a lot of front/back motion, the creaking stops. If I get on it some more then there is a rhythmic creak from the BB that is in time with my pedal stroke. Not always, just sometimes. Should I be worried about this? Does my BB need lubrication or am I stressing that area of my frame a lot?? Sorry to be a worry wart, but this is my first expensive bike and I just want to keep it in good shape.

Sometimes creaks are hard to locate...

I solved mine by putting a little chain oil on the cam of the skewers...

The creak was coming from skewer/clamp friction when the bike was a rockin'...

Check and make sure your chainring bolts are snug. If they are a little loose they creak.

Does it do it off the trainer?

Lube your skewers and see if it goes away.

make sure the seat tube and post are clean and tight.

if it's metal on metal, throw some lube in there, if there's carbon... well I won't get into that. just make sure it's clean and tight.

Can be the source of creaks that sound like BB issues.

Thanks everyone, I will check the chainring bolts and skewers. It really sounds like it's coming from the BB area and not in back. At first I thought it was the trainer creaking a little bit but now I don't think so.

It doesn't creak on the road which makes me thing it's some trainer specific stress that's being put on the bike which is what worried me. I think the seat post is ok, it's clean and tight and it is carbon. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I'll post back if either of the two to suggestions don't solve the problem. You guys are great.

Hate to be the pessimist...but I just recently had a similar noise in my bb of my '98 C'Dale R4000. Turned out the BB was thrashed. It felt fine with the cranks on, but once they were off you could feel the grinding when you turned the spindle. On the upside it prompted what ended up a complete rebuild incl powder coating. I have quite a few miles on it and it was the original bb. I would say it never hurts to just spin off the cranks and check the feel at the spindle just to be sure.

On the other hand your bike is probably too new for bb issues.

i hope so, but it's exactly things like this that i'm worried about so i want to stop now and diagnose before running into major problems. would it make sense that if i spin smoothly this might stop??
