Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Let's Legalize Team Mate Body Contact

I think that we should legalize team mate to team mate body contact during races. The rule would allow team members to do things like push someone up a hill, slingshot a sprinter to the finish line with a 9 person body whip, or make it so that the designated team leader doesn't even have to pedal.

Did your climber eat one too many grapes last night and is now getting dropped like a used diaper? Well, you could use your sprinters to slingshot him back up to the lead group while he recovers.

Did your sprinter watch too many reruns of Lance Armstrong climbing and now thinks he's a mountain goat? Just get your leadout train to link hands and slingshot the sprinter to the finish line.

Legalizing team mate body contact will make cycling much more of a team sport. No longer will a climber be confined to climb and a sprinter be confined to sprint. The roles are now ambiguous and all that matters is your team's overall strength. You won't have to be that guy with no ass in order to be able to win that race that finishes at the top of a ski resort. You could just have a team of climbers push you all the way up. It would make all the Freds of cycling into potential race winners. We would have a revolution in cycling tactics and bring forth a start to a new age.

Did you have an itch while riding but could not take your hands off the bars? We'll you could use your teammate to scratch it.

I see no reason why it should not be allowed, i second Chasing Dreams motion

there is something like that in track racing where there are not so many variables. I would believe that the tactics you mention were tried in the early days and so many people were hurt that it was banned. Also team mate contact in the Race Across America. You would not believe some of the things I did for my rider from a moving van like the Nupercainal for the saddle sore.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that part. You could get a team mate to hold out your ding dong while you relieve yourself mid pack.

You are trying to fundamentally change cycling from an individual sport with some team aspects into full team sport with that change.

I do give you credit for being able to use a thesaurus, however, it is ineffective communication when we have to either look up half the words you spew or really think about the contextual meaning. Are you trying to prove how smart you are by using shift F7 in MS Word? Careful with that, you might end up signing your name as "Baby Kangaroo."

Okay...

A few points...

1) Chasing Dreams is either RyanF, A relative of RyanF or Jesse Jackson.

2) Has Chasing Dreams ever been in a bike race before?

3) Would you want a bunch of squirrely Cat5 dudes acting they are racing a Madison and giving each other hand-slings?

4) Does Chasing Dreams have some sort of closed head injury, causing him to ask completely inane questions?

Everything you say is beautiful. This is golden. I await further messages.

Learn to ride madisons. It's hairy enough with 10 to 16 pairs on a track and fairly well defined principles for making the exchanges.

1) Who the hell is RyanF? I'm a much more cognitive organism.

2) I've been to plenty but I'm a sprinter so I get dropped easily on the hills. I want my team mates to push and pull me to the finish line.

3) Why not? Cat. 5 racers barely do any team work as it is and with the hand-slings there would be non stop attacks from the back of the pack.

4) There is no such thing as a dumb question, only dumb answers.

Cat 5 racers can barely control their bikes. You don't want them trying to throw each other around on them.

If you can barely get to the finish to unleash your sprint, either train more or become a track sprinter. The longest race for them is about 2 km, and that's motorpaced until about 600 m to go. And you even get banking to play with instead of hills.

The Cat. 5s don't have to do Madison style hand slings, they could just push each other by the butt.

And track racing is boring.

Pushes is arguably more dangerous-- the guy getting the push then has no control over it, and can get pushed onto a dead wheel.

And try watching some mass start track racing or some 6-days. Boring it isn't.

Ok, Mr. Finiky,
How about detachable tow ropes?

1) If you don't know who RyanF is, then how do you know you are 'a much more cognitive organism'?
Methinks you're more of an organ, if you catch the drift...

2) I didn't ask if you've BEEN to a race, but if you've been IN a race. Substantive difference. Being a sprinter doesn't mean you have to get dropped easily on hills...I don't. You gotta get to the end and I don't mean in the broom wagon.

3) Cat5 dudes hand-slinging each other would quickly turn an already sketchy race into a rugby scrum.

4) And yes, there are dumb questions, posed by dumbasses. You prove the point.
