Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike and BMW Z3

Does a bike fit in the trunk? That's an important detail in buying cars.

Your bike deserves better than the trunk. Try the back seat.

If the seats don't fold down, I doubt it. The only thing meant to fit in the M3's trunk are golf clubs. You can take the wheels off and put it in the back seat though. (upside down so you don't scratch that leather)

I'm very sure the Z3 has no backseat. Depending on what size the frame is, you can take the wheels off and lay them in the passenger seat and place the frame in the trunk. Also unless it's a hard top forget about a roofrack for those who mentioned that.

Only one way to find out: take the bike to the dealership and try it.

Or listen to the guy whose roommate has a Z3.

I've always found that BMW's trunks are bigger than you'd think, maybe you can take the wheels off and lay the frame/**** in the trunk with the wheels on top.

I've had good luck with the Saris Bones on both my Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera and my Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster.

Actually my daily is a beat-up 98 Riv. That Lamborghini is probably the coolest car ever, if I only had 370,000 to waste. A 911 wouldn't be too bad either...

That's what I was hoping for. No one believes me, but I can fit my bike pretty comfortably in my Porsche right now. I think the trunk on the Z3 is smaller, though, so I was hoping someone who had one who could offer some insight...it's not looking too good, though.

Also, there is no back seat or roof on a Z3. The back seat in my Porsche right now is a joke, but putting the bike in the trunk isn't a problem (better than putting it on a rack).

BTW....if anyone wants to buy a Porsche 924S with a bad clutch, just PM me.

I had a '73 BMW 2002, and even though the car was smaller than a new Mini, I could fit A LOT into that trunk. There was just a piece of carpet and a piece of cardboard that guarded the QP's from getting dented from the inside.
Anyways, the back seat of the Porsche is a joke because it was a joke. Porsche put it in there so that they could race it in the sedan class in TransAm.

I've got a BMW 5-series sedan. I can haul 5 bikes on the roof rack, one in the back seat, and one in the trunk, plus wheels. It's the perfect team car.

I've got an M-Coupe which is basically a Z3 hardtop with hatchback.
There's no way I could get my bike in the back of it.

Well I guess that settles it, then. Bummer. Maybe I'll actually have to own a sedan for the first time in my life.

Why get a sedan and leave out all that wasted airspace above the trunk?

Hatchbacks are where it's at.

I had a Honda Prelude and to get my bike in the trunk without folding the seat down, I'd have to take both wheels off and the seat. Which, you know, is not that big of a deal. 30 seconds and it was broken-down or built-up to ride. I used to do the same with my Mazda RX-7s, but I had to fold the cargo cover down to get the bike in.

I know the allure of having a bike rack on the back of one's car is great, especially if you're hauling a bunch of people and their bikes to a race, but if it's just you, there's nothing wrong with stuffing your bike in the backseat or trunk. Just lay a towel down for the chain and call it a day.

Oh crap, you said Z3. I thought you said M3. Firstly, don't get a Z3. Secondly, you won't be able to fit anything in there. Back to the first point, I really don't think you should get a Z3. I'm not trying to be mean but...it does have some...sexual preference image issues... Ok, let's put it this way. My neighbors' 18 year old blonde daughter drives one, and when my girlfriend was watching "Gay, Straight, or Taken" the other day, I could instantly identify the gay one within the first 5 minutes of the show when he was driving a Z3.

Good to hear, I have a miata as my only car as well and plan to purchase a Saris bones rack when the weather gets a little warmer here.

That car is just too much fun for too little $$.
