Should I upgrade to Dura-Ace now, or wait?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Should I upgrade to Dura-Ace now, or wait?

I bought a CR-1 Pro not too long ago, and would like to get it as light as possible. One of the things I'm going to do at some point, is upgrade from the Ultegra groupset that it has now, to Dura-Ace. Normally, I'd wait a couple months til the christmas credit card debt is completely paid off (also because you can get a full Dura Ace group from PBK for under a grand), but I'm wondering if now would be a better time, since the components on the bike now have very low outdoor mileage, and would probably be a bit easier to sell on Ebay. Right now I have under 200 miles of outdoor mileage on it...will it significantly depreciate as the miles pass? Also, I'm kind of hoping to get between $300 and $400 for the set. Is that realistic?

Hey, another question - I didn't even think about picking up Campy. Is that better than Shimano?

Upgrade to Red, if you want to get it "as light as possible"

I like Shimano, and would like to stay with it. Besides, according to weight weenies, the SRAM stuff isn't as light as it's listed.

You should get more than 3-400 for the ultegra, just make sure to list all the parts individually, and include good pictures.

You mean sell each part individually (sorry, I'm actually very new to the ebay thing)? Should I set reserves for any of the parts? Also, I can get more than 3-400 now, or is depreciation not a big factor? In other words, so long as there's low wear/no scratches, is it all the same once you slap the "Used" tag on it, or does the depreciation accelerate from 200 mile to, say, 500 miles?

Yea you should sell each component individually. You can set reserves, but it seems like most of the time stuff goes for more when its listed a $.99 with no reserve. Also end the auction on a sunday night, so it ends around 9pm eastern. I saw some Ultegra brifters go for $135 this morning because nobody is checking out ebay at 9 on a monday morning.

I wouldn't worry about depreciation, it seems like all the mileages listed on ebay are bogus anyway.

Your results may vary, but this is what has worked for me.

If Shimano is really releasing a hidden-cable DA group then wait for it to be released so that you can benefit the lower prices in the standard 7800 group.

Or go with Campy Record.

Sounds like good advice, thank you. One more question for you - like I said, I have very little experience on Ebay; in fact, I only have 1 feedback. Will that be a big enough problem so that I should enlist a friend that has a lot more feedback?

I suspect it's going to be quite a while before that group is released.

You obviously like what you see now with the DA group. Go ahead and get it now if that's what you want.

You have some good guidance on how to go about doing that with the posts above.

The idea of waiting for something better (or for the price to be lowered on the current version) is a noble one, but you could apply that to any purchase. And if you really apply it, you'd never buy anything. Live in the now (within reason, obviously) .. get it now and don't look back. Will it all of a sudden be cheaper the moment after you purchase it? Perhaps, but so what?

And that range is about right for what you should expect to get for your Ultegra set.

i'm not a BF enabler: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

fwiw - i love my DA

fwiw2 - i'm building up a beater bike with rival. sorely tempted to put ultegra cranks/bb/fd on it, but until i experience the rival versions, i don't see the point in the additional expense. even if pbk has a great deal on them right now.

Who's we? I wasn't asking anyone to run my budget, I was asking botto his reasoning.

Has Shimano said that? Or just the quote from that Rabobank mechanic that led to the ongoing thread about the new groupset?

Upgrade immediately!

Then upgrade when next year's group comes out!

That is the Bikeforums Road Cycling way!

NEVER be seen with last year's group, and NEVER be seen without the most expensive group you have enough available credit to charge.

^^ nope, everyone's talking about DA w/o antenna cables.

Honestly, you have ultegra, you've admitted that you don't have tons of cash kicking around -- is it worth $600 to you to upgrade? Are you going to race? what happens if you crash? If you don't race, do you think it'll make much difference at all to be riding DA? If you just want the feel, ultegra SL brifers go for <$200 on ebay, and have nearly the same metallic click that DA does.

It's all up to you, but upgrading just because you can concievably do it in your budget doesn't always make it a good idea

FWIW - older versions of DA don't really drop in price much if any. It just seems like the new groups get more expensive.

Also going from Ultegra to DA I would keep the cassette and Front Der. as Ultegra. Swap the Rear Der. the STI levers, and brake calipers. Crank = meh. I think either is fine. Chain - no brainer to switch to a different chain...might I recommend KMC DX10 (sold at Performance as their "Forte" brand).
