Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tire damage beyond repair?

My rear Michelin Krylion rear tire (23 mm) flatted with a huge bang on me today. There was an almost 1 inch long cut going into the casing and that pierced the tube at the deepest point. I thought at first that it would be impossible to ride on this tire anymore. Well I had to try, so I folded a dollar bill against the cut to support the tire, inflated it only to 90 psi and miraculously it held up and I was able to slowly limp home.

So I started to wonder, how often if ever have you got tire damage that was impossible to fix?

In well over 50,000 miles of riding, I have never had tire damage that was so serious that I could not "limp home". If you have steep mountains to climb and descend, however, that limping can be kind of dicey.

One time I thought I did, I inflated my P2R's to 120psi, and hit a badm transition in a soon-to-be repaved road. The tire blew out and made an inch-long gash in the sidewall. I thought the tire (with less than 100 miles) was cooked, but my old coach gave me a piece of a Vittoria Atlanta tire and told me to use tubular glue to glue it inside the tire behind the cut. After it sitting for a few months, I finally put it onto my road bike yesterday and there was no hop. it worked great!
