Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Superbowl Sunday Ride (2.3.08)

58 miles. Dropped from two different group rides. First the Cadence Ride on 9W. Then when I got to the Runcibal Spoon, I had a Zucchini Muffin and joined another group, which I got dropped from 10 miles in due to a flat. We passed the Nyack Ride, and man, they are fast. The reason I couldn't keep up with either group is because, A, I ran in the morning, and B, because I suck. Two valid reasons.

Let's hope the Giants win.

I didn't even know that was on today until I saw a BBC article about advertising costs for it.

Unfortunately didn't get out riding regardless, but I really need to practise on my new TT bike for a duathlon next Sunday.

Will have some light trainer time, or a short spin about the neighborhood later. I'm still nice and bruised from some trails last night. Who'd have thought that 700x23 @ 110psi is the WRONG thing to have off the road (:

I brought my backup bike in from the garage, attached the front wheel, hooked it back up to the trainer and did 40 minutes after shaving the winter fur off my legs. I've decided that now that Feb. is here, this is it....time now to start thinking like a cyclist again....working out inside and eating smart to drop the winter weight and ready for the spring riding season, if it ever gets here. It has been a tough winter around these parts, with lots of snow, ice, and cold and few chances for me to ride outside.

Went for a short 12 mile ride yesterday, it was cold. Took today off to play tennis with the little guy. Will hit the trainer again tomorrow.

I had enough church stuff to do this weekend that I knew I couldn't do much out-and-out riding. Events, people in situations that need helping hands, it's just one of those things.

Sooooo, I worked out Friday night, doing some pushups, shoulder presses, bent-over rows, jump squats with dumbells, calf raises, and crunches. Then I biked to all of my church stuff this weekend instead of taking the bus. Maybe 25 miles or a little more if I'm lucky.

Oh well, maybe I'll do a real ride tomorrow...in the cold rain.

60F here where it should be 30-40 average...sunny, no wind...did 15 yesterday and 20 today...lots of roadies out today, I guess if you ride a road bike, the majority of us don't spend too much time in the local sports bar eating hot wings...

I was on the Nyack Ride today. Were in that large group we saw on Piermont Road coming north on our way south? Perhaps that's where you saw us. I parked up in Tuxedo and rode down to the shop (25 miles) and then did Nyack. My bike started making increasingly horrific grinding noises under drivetrain load, so I pulled off the ride in Piermont (3 miles from the end) to get my bike fixed. They installed a new D.A. bottom bracket to replace the one I had fried (I do this every winter with my Ibis, that's the bike I ride in the slop). Then I rode back to the car in Tuxedo. Ooofaaa, Gate Hill Road sucked today (big hill 8 miles from the end of my ride). 88 miles. Didn't get shelled on Nyack either. Nice weather and I managed to not crash on all the black ice early this morning.

I did run into some Nyack Ride people later at the Runcible on my ride home and told them that I did the entire ride with a seized up BB and that now that I have a BB that works they are in Big Trouble. They appeared unconcerned. They should be. If Pcad on a vapor locked BB bicycle can hang with them it makes their claims to high velo velocity dubious at best. Either they are not so fast after all, or Pcad isn't as slow as he used to be. Maybe both.

And of course, Go Giants.

Must be all that rest huh?

Yesterday was 25 miles of hill repeats with a friend who's almost as crazy as me, close to 2000' in the middle 18 miles.

Today I led a ride with 66 miles of small rolling hills and flats, maybe 1500' over the whole course. The group started with 5, but 3 chose to turn back and only do ~30 miles while the only girl and me did the whole thing (she's pretty bad ass). We even dumpstered some vegetarian sushi and fruit salad from a whole foods. Then I got back home and stuffed my face with leftovers.

Awesome day.

I think there's something to this rest day crap after all. How this will mesh with my perpetual need to ride all the time remains to be seen.

Just do some brutal core workouts the day before a rest day and you won't want to ride, or stand.

25 mile tempo with some moderate climbs. Now it's time to settle in with some good food... cold beer... my wife and 4 kids... and watch the game. Life is good.
