Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

EDGE wheelsets, they look like Token..are they good wheels?

1st question:

I am seeing a lot of Edge branded, Token-looking carbon wheelsets either on eBay or on forums...these are made in Taiwan apparently. Any feedback on how good they are in terms of durability and performance? The price is very affordable but of course there is the old adage " you get what you pay for". I am asking the vast, intelligent and widely informative feedback of the wide world of bike forums here so i hope you guys can share your views. Thanks in advance.

Now my 2nd question:

Am I better off buying a HED3 rear only wheel for A$ 1200.00 (I have the front H3 already but have yet the budget to buy the rear until now) or would a new, 85mm EDGE wheelset for AU$ 900.00 be a better buy? This connected to my first question so please show some compassion and help me decide properly. These are hard earned $$$$ I am blowing off for some fantastice rounded plastics :-)

By the way I am going to use it on beginner Time trials and even on some TT training rides.
Cheers!

The edge wheels sold on ebay are rebadged. The edge wheels sold through shops like Fairwheel bikes and other high end places are Edge Composites out of Utah. They are much lighter/stronger but also a lot more expensive. This is the logo of the edge composites rims(and they dont make a 85mm only a 38mm/68mm)

Word is the Edge Composites brand is backed up by a group of engineers who left Reynolds. Beyond some he-said, she-said nonsense there is a compelling argument attesting to the durability their molding process lends to the wheels. In addition to this, you can also purchase the wheel ONLY if you desire. Lace it up with some DT swiss hubs and spokes and call it a day, eh?

Both Token and Edge are rebadged Equinox(at least the rims are made by them, probably not built by them). They're a bit heavy but rather good performance and pretty durable.
85mm tubulars dont just look fast..

Yeah, I saw those. I guess the rationale was to give riders the option to use a Powertap with a disc wheel, or something 99% like a disc wheel.

I can't wait for my Blackwell 100's to get here, though...

Back on topic for a bit... I think it's crazy to buy bargain-basement carbon wheels. It's not necessarily because the more expensive ones are fundamentally better, but the more expensive ones ARE sold by companies with phone numbers you can call and speak to a human being for crash replacement, technical questions, etc. etc.

If you're doing TT's and want to do something on the cheap for the rear, check out www.wheelbuilder.com and look at the disc wheel cover. Works with just about any wheel and turns it into a disc. Of course, check the local TT rules to make sure they're legal, or just make sure nobody at the race cares.

I've had a some experience with those rims. Solid, a tad heavy but stiff and reliable. The Edge build, I know nothing about, but I've used the Equinox build (Joytec hubs, Sapim spokes) for over a year now w/o any problems.

I don't see why the Token rims laced with good hubs and good spokes would be bad. There is better out there, but it's much more expensive. Sure, they're a bit heavier, but half the price.

They all come out of Dick Chaney's secret carbon bicycle parts factory anyway so what is the big deal.
