Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cheap Wheelset?

Hey there, I've got a pretty bad set of stock wheels on my '05 specialized allez that i need to replace. However, i don't know much about wheelsets and what i need to be looking for. Any suggestions for a decent wheel set (not looking for aero wheels that cost a grand or more) in the 250-350 range?

thanks guys

What kind of wheels do you have, and what's wrong with them?

they are like DIAS? i believe. they came with my bike and my bike was only 700. They worked well for a while, but after 2k miles the spokes have started to pop and the wheels are just too heavy. I'm ready to invest a little.

I'd be scanning ebay for a used set from a reputable seller (be careful buying used, but this is the way to get the bang from you buck in that price range). Open pro/DT 1.1/velocity aerohead whith something like ultegras or chorus/centaur is another good option...coloradocyclist.com has some good deals for example.

My first bike was a Giant OCR3, similar to your allez. When I switched out the stock wheels (cheap heavy Alex DR13) to some wheelsmith gold, Dura Ace hubs laced to Mavic Reflex rims with double butted spokes the difference in ride quality was noticeable immediately! These wheels were way lighter than the originals, probable were around 1500g. So the DA/ultegra open pro option would be lighter and bulletproof (and serviceable). I still have the wheelsmith wheelset along with about 4 others now....I need to get rid of some or the GF will kill me (the spare room is now the 'bike room')...

I agree these are solid, but Mavic hasn't made 'em for a few years now. Occasionally, an NOS set will appear on ebay.

Do you race or intend to race? some of the wheels listed above are a little on the heavy side >1900g. Would be fine for normal riding but if you intend racing or like fast riding ou can probably drop 3-400g off for similar $ although you may have to go the used route on eBay EEK!

+1, I was very happy with the Ultegra-Aerohead set that Lyle built me. They also have excellent customer service. However if you are going handbuilt it's also worth looking around in your local area, unless you live in the sticks there's likely to be someone who could build you some good wheels for around the same price. Support your local LBS if it's an option.

I say neuvation or soul bike (bikesoul.com)

I'm probably going to be buying a wheelset from bikesoul this week. The 3.0's look sweet!

Don't overlook the Fulcrum 5 Evolution wheels. Not the lightest wheelset out there, but stiff and accelerates very well. Maybe not the best pairing with a full aluminum frame though. I went from my Flyte to a carbon Fuji and love the wheels even more now.

Okay, nevermind. I was going to offer to buy them if they were something like the Aksiums.

For me, I'm happy with a set of 'budget' wheels like the Aksiums. $200 new for a set, or around $120 if you find take-offs from someone that is upgrading.
