Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Helmet Fit Giro vs. Bell

I have a Giro Monza from a couple of years ago that fits a little tightly against my forehead, and is loose around the sides...

I was wondering whether anyone could suggest a helmet that is a little longer front to back, and narrower from side to side... is the shape of the Bell more along those lines, or does anyone have a recommendation for what helmet to look at...?

I had the same problem with Giro's Pneumo. Switched to a Bell Sweep R and Rudy Project Kontact and really like the fit of both.

Come to think of it it might have been the pneumo, but it's been so long since I bought it... no visor, but aside from that I'm not sure. It seems like the giro's all have the same sort of shape to them... and after four plus years I might as well figure on a replacement helmet, perhaps.

I had the same problem with the Monza and I switched to the Bell Sweep R which, for me, was a much better fit all around.

I thought the Giro felt and looked "rounder". I bought the Bell Sweep R and it fits much snugger and looks smaller too.

This is REALLY personal though. Some people love the Giro fit.

Try it on. Different helmets from the same brand can fit differently. In particular, high end and low helmets from the same brand can have a very different fit.

I'm one of those who don't like the Giro fit -- and it's too bad since I like their styling best. Too much pressure at the front and rear of my head. Bell just fits better.

Giro (atmos + ionos) = O
Bell (sweep r) = 0

My Giro Pneumo fits really well.

It's a mater of head shape.

ProFail:

I don't have a problem with the quality of construction of the Giro, but I end up getting pressure on my forehead, without a good fit around the sides... the main question I was trying to get an answer to was what helmets would have more of an appropriate shape for my big noggin. Essentially the Giro is more than wide enough, but the large doesn't give me enough fore/aft room...

The responses have been useful so far, and I am going to give one of the Bell Sweeps a day in court, provided I can find someone who has them in stock in a large.

I have ridden with a Giro Eclipse for the last 5 years or so, and it's fit was pretty decent - certainly not uncomfortable. Like the OP, I had a little extra play on the sides of the helmet, and the words "big noggin" apply to me as well. However when I tried on the Bell Sweep R, I was amazed at how well it fit me. I ultimately went with a Ghisallo because it had a smoother profile on the back end, bigger vents, and better padding on the inside. (I usually keep what's left of my hair very short, so the extra padding across the front half of the Ghisallo matches well with where I am lacking the natural padding.) I haven't ridden with the Ghisallo in hot weather, but the venting looks excellent and the fit is spot on for me.

The sweep r fits me really well, and I especially like the adjustment knob in the back. Great helmet.

Giros tend to fit people with rounder heads. Folks with a more angular noggin will usually find a Bell more comfortable.

Where would Specialized helmets fit it? Are they more O or 0?

I find the Decibel to fit very similar to the Atmos and Ionos. So O
