Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Frame a little too big for me, Six13...

A friend is selling me an almost brand new bike, Six13 Team 2, for a very good deal.

Its a 56cm frame, I am 5'-8" and the bike seems a little big only when I do the stand measurement standing test to the top tube. I have noticed the Cannondale Six13 measurements for a 56cm tend to be small in frame size.

The standing test is a tight fit, although the bike "feels" confortable once I ride it, the reach out is perfect for me.

What do you suggest?

The "standing test" is not an accurate one. You're correct that a person your height is most likely to fit on a 54, but If you don't feel too stretched out while riding it, you should be fine.

If you're 5'8", a 56cm Six13 will be much too large for you. I'd suggest not buying.

if the knee drop to pedal and extension look good and you don't feel over-extended then go for it.

For comparison, I'm 5'11" and I ride a 54cm CAAD9 (same geometry as the Six13)

To add to that comparison, I'm 5'10 and would fit a 56cm CAAD frame (a 54 would require a 140mm stem). I used to ride a 58cm Cannondale in the 90's, but the geometry of those seem to be comparable to the 56cm frames of today. It all depends on proportions.

I am 5'11" and had a CD in 56.. it was too big... I now ride a 55 and a 54.5 frame.. but we are all different.
If it is truly a killer deal I would buy it... ride it..if it is not right.. keep an eye on ebay for 54cm frame.. buy it.. trade the parts.. sell the 56 frame on ebay.. could probably do it on the cheap. Depends on how killer the killer deal is.

I'm 5'11"+ and I ride a 56cm. A 5' 8" person would probably be on a 52cm or 54cm frame, 54cm tops.

If the bike doesn't fit you it doesn't matter what the price is, it's not right, period.

i wouldn't worry about it. you have almost unlimited adjustment in the seat, stem, handlebars all of which
can be had can be had for a song on ebay. if you,re thinking 'bout challenging cancellara in a tt you might consider KOPs.

Profoundly incorrect. If your bike doesn't fit you can change stems and seat height ad nauseum and you will NOT be in the right position on the bicycle. PERIOD. Next question already.

You insufferable PINheads. Sweet Mother of Merckx have any of you actually ridden a friggin road bicycle?

elucidate. i've adjusted a number of road bikes to fit me. it's a matter of inches. than again i do everything myself and don't use shops. don't need them.

Geeze Pcad said period twice.. and yet people continue to to post.. inconceivable.

I would be skeptical that the bike would fit you.. but everyone is different.. you might be 5'8" with a 32" inseam.. who knows..

I still say you have a chance to work it out to your advantage if the deal is good enough. Plenty of 54cm frames on ebay.

If it takes more than a centimeter or two to make the frame fit you, then you're sacrificing mechanics to achieve fit/comfort. Bikes are designed with pedaling geometry in mind. Hip and knee angles, ankle rotation, all must be taken into account. This doesn't even start to address center of gravity issues.

Long story short, you can force fit a larger frame to your body, but you'll sacrifice performance for it.

The OP's bike sounds big for him, but man, that sounds tiny to me based on your size... but I don't know Cannondale geometry.

i'm 5' 11" i bought a 58 cm frame on ebay. was a little long so i ditched the 120mm stem and got a 100mm fits great. i think people on these forums overstress the things they feel comfortable with because bikes are so simple. it's like my brother- in -law constantly talkin' about shocks and motor oil. he doesn't have a clue about autos.

Ignore the stand-over. As far as the other aspects of fit, it's not possible for people on an online forum to accurately say if fits you. A bike of a given size does not fit all who have exactly the same measurements, even the same detailed measurements. You're the one riding it. Since you say it's comfortable and the reach is perfect, I'd be inclined to think it fits you well enough, assuming you have enough riding experience to know that the reach is perfect and that the bike is comfortable. Just make sure you're not letting the "very good deal" affect your impressions of the fit. Since it's your friend you're buying it from, you might see if you could get him to let you pay some sort of "rental fee" that would be applied to the purchase of the bike if you decided to buy it, so you could ride it a while to be sure about the fit.

You can get a 56cm or a 58cm frame to 'fit' you with a 100mm stem. But it doesn't. You're not far enough forward over the front wheel for good racing bike position. Can you ride the bike? Of course. Will it be comfortable? Quite possibly. Does it actually fit you?

No.

That doesn't mean it won't work for you and we can't stop you. But that's why we all say it won't fit. Period. (Don't make me say that again).

at 5'11" with a true inseam of 32"s and arms that require a 34" sleeve. i could easily fit a 58cm. but most people on these boards don't race. and this bike fits me great. i just don't belive that you can't dial in fit if your within 2 or 3cm.s of frame size.
