Ksyrium SL died... fix or get new handbuilt wheels...?
Righto. I recently got some used Kysrium SLs off ebay. After about 500km I start getting this crazy vibration coming from the rear wheel whenever I'm descending. I take them into my LBS and he takes apart the rear hub and finds out its stuffed, I need a new cassette body, cassette body seal and driving pawls.
Now, I'm tempted to get some nice new hand built wheels (from the same LBS) to replace the Kysriums altogether. This will be more expensive, but I think perhaps more durable in the long run? (given that these Kysriums seem to be fairly heavily used already, according to the ebay listing they had ~7000km when I bought them).
What are your thoughts?
I was quoted AU$250+labour to fix the Kysriums (I'm guessing maybe $300-350 total)
The cost of the handbuilts will vary based on spec.... was quoted ~AU$1300 for DT RR 1.1s on DT 240 hubs. (remember, everything is more expensive here in oz, Kysrium SLs retail for about $1500 new afaik)
And the second question - if I do go the hand built route, any suggestions? LBS recommended Open Pros or DT 1.1s on DT 240 hubs. This is pricey, but as far as I can tell there aren't many better hubs. And the wheel set would come in around 1600g I think. Or I could go for a slightly deeper rim (e.g. RR 1.2s) and add 200g - is it worth the strength/aerodynamic benefit?
I'm running campag btw, in case anyone suggests Ultegra/DA hubs
Usage: Training + crit racing + road racing. About 250km per week. (I'm no where near competitive enough to justify a second set of race wheels, and I do have a "beater" for commuting, wet weather etc)
Cheers. Appreciate any opinions.

Congratulations. To my knowledge this may be the first recorded destruction of a Mavic Kysirium wheel.
Ship your detonated Ksyrium wheel to the Mavic War Museum. Actually, the Mavic Gulfstream V should land at a private airport near you to pick up your relic and replace your wheels with a Letter of Thanks from the Mavic War Museum Curator.

Hmm.
My Kysrium SL freehub wore out.
Do you think it would be better to get some new handbuilt wheels, or have the Kysrium repaired?
(the rest of the post was an attempt to address further questions... e.g. what happened? how much will it cost? what sort of hand built wheels? etc etc)

Go handbuilt. I've never been a fan of factory wheels - building a lighter, cheaper, equally strong custom set is easy.
DT 240's are a great hub to base a custom set around. I'd recommend the RR1.1's over Open Pros, and my personal spoke preference is the CX-ray by Sapim (though you'll find as many differences here as there are wheel builders).

That isnt really that much component wise.. if the wheels are in good shape other than that, just fix them.

happens more than you think. Hell, I had some DOA out of the box.
