Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

any bontrager wheel fans here?

hey, on my stock bont wheels from a 1500, one of the spokes popped out of the rim because it's cracked.
I'm going to trade them up and get a better set of bonts. I'm a tall rider, 220 and ride for fitness.
Which bontrager set would you recommend under $500?

Yeah, the wheels on my 1500 just wouldn't stay true. I know nothing about their more expensive stuff though. Warranty?

race x lights, is about as good as your going to do. I had a set of just plain race wheels and I liked them ok. The price was right and they looked pretty cool

I bought a Trek 5.2 last August that came with Bontrager RaceLite wheels. I immediately got some open pro + ultegra hub standard wheels to train on (at Performance, only $200 for the wheelset). I didn't like my chances of that wheelset being reliable with me being in the 200lb range.

They are now my race wheels. They are a bit lighter than my 32 spoke wheels and probably a bit more aerodynamic with fewer spokes and bladed. But more importantly, what makes them race wheels is that they aren't constantly being beat up by daily riding and I can mount fresh, little used tires on them and a little used cassette that I know will be in good shape come race day.

If I were not racing, I'd sell the Bontrager's off for what I could get for them. I never judge people by their wheels, but I can never understand the decision that people who ride purely for pleasure or fitness make to exclusively run racing wheelsets. They are expensive, hard to repair and maintain, less durable, and don't offer a huge benefit compared to 32 spoke wheels when used in training. Their utility in racing is suspect as well, although, when racing, you seek any benefit, no matter how small.

I have the Race Lite Aero's and have been happy with them - not the lightest, but for the price it wasn't bad. And with me being at 190lbs. haven't had any issues with them. Truth be told, I thought they looked good.

What a terrible thing to say. Karma has a way of correcting attitudes like you've displayed above. I'd be extra careful for the next few days you ride your bike.

2 majore re-trueings, a complete rebuild, a warranty replacement, and another majore re-trueing. All in 5,700 miles for a race lite rear. (never any issues with the front though.) I've given up on them.

Hahah, interesting & blunt reply. I like!

I have el cheapo Bontrager Select wheels on my singlespeed commuter. They've held up despite being ridden over some nasty roads. I intend to keep using them for my commute.

Well this just goes to show how opinions are like ******es. I have been running stock Bontrager Selects on my LeMond Tourmalet since I bought it back in 2005 and have had zero issues with them thus far. I am 207-210lbs and have only had them trued after their first couple of hundred miles, haven't needed a thing since. I am a fan of these wheels and see no reason to upgrade since I do not race and do not care to spend alot of money on wheels with no advantage over what I currently have.

Your comment to the naysayers, however, really was uncalled for and makes me glad that your "great social life" keeps you from coming around here much. We have enough of that nonsense in here already.

Cheers,

Brian

The entry-level wheels aren't that great, especially if you are a heavier rider. Their higher-end (Race Lite and above) start to get really competitive with other brands out there.

I have used them and don't have any problems with them.

I have been running Race X lites on my BMC for 3 years. I am still waiting for them to fail. I am 185 lbs, and they are as straight and true now as when I got them. DT swiss hubs made for Bontrager, aero spokes. Although I am shocked they are such a good wheelset, I wouldnt pay $500 for them. But if you could get them cheap enough, I would say go for it. I would reccomend an upgrade to Conti GP4000's for tires.
